Spring Break: Expectation vs. Reality

Spring Break? More like pre-finals week.

Since forever, we all have looked at the stereotypical college spring break and wondered just how we could fit into that. Now that I'm finally there, I realize how fake it all is.

Sure, I heard some stereotypical girls talking about their plans for the beach and illegal drinking, but I don't fit into the equation at all. First of all, I've never really been the social type. I've always been that kid that never had conversations with the popular kids or hung out a lot. Then, no one has ever wanted me to join them because I wasn't very popular. And now, since I haven't joined a sorority or anything, I realize that now more than ever that I am an introvert.

Spring break is usually considered that time where everyone goes out and parties and fills hotels and goes to the beach every day. There's always underage drinking and bikinis and... need I go on? I'm sure we all know just what I''m talking about.

So here we go...

VERSUS

Expectation:

Reality:

I have two essays due by the end of break, and, as an English major, I can't exactly not do them.

Not to mention, finals are only a week following the return of classes.

Expectation:

Reality:

I think I'll just sit here and contemplate my life choices instead. Thanks, but no thanks.

Expectation:

Reality:

Spring isn't warm everywhere, and I'd prefer a comfy chair to a hot-to-the-touch floatable anytime.

Expectation:

Reality:

I can't even afford alcohol, let alone drink it legally. Besides, Capri Sun will forever be a favorite of mine, and if I can drink it at the beach and make it look like I'm not studying 24/7, so be it.

Expectation:

Reality:

Hey, the library will be practically empty. I might as well take advantage of it and get some work done... or catch up on sleep I'll be missing in the week following break. I imagine anything will feel comfortable when it comes to the amount of time I'll need to do my assignments.

Spring Break? More like pre-finals week.

I am not sure how many people can relate to me. In fact, I doubt even my friends can. During this spring break, I will be sitting here binge-watching Netflix and gaming playlists on YouTube all while sleeping as late as I can and eating whatever I can afford. On the side, though, I still have essays to write and studying to do for the final exams in two weeks from today. After all, I can't afford to lose my scholarships because I wanted to have fun so close to summer.

I'll get my rest and fun eventually, but for now, I'm going to sit here and try not to procrastinate.

May the odds be ever in your favor, no matter how you're spending your break.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
