How much do we really know about what happened at Benghazi? Yet, when it comes to politics Benghazi is an essential talking point. If you are like me then you know this: Americans died, it was not good, and somehow Hillary Clinton is involved. You may even know what the news said in 2012. Benghazi was an unfortunate event where a civil protest became a riot where the embassy building was burned resulting in the death of the ambassador.
Let me break it down for you. Benghazi is a city in Libya, which is a northern border country in Africa. It has been a scene of civil unrest for years. America, France, and Britain all had political support in the city trying to build a stable government. Locals were being trained for a militia. The unrest continued. Basically, Benghazi had been deemed unsafe by the U.N. and they had decided the risks of being there did not warrant the undetermined reward. By mid-2012 America was the last country to have continued support from the area.
This should have been enough to keep Americans from being there. But instead there is not only 1 American CIA base to protect, but also now Ambassador Stephens was going to be coming into town. The sad thing is Chris Stevens was doing his job. He has been recognized for being compassionate and really loving the country of Libya. He was a casualty of something he was not prepared for. In his correspondence with the state department he had repeatedly requested for better security for the Benghazi compound. Unfortunately, those requests were never granted.
Here is something people need to understand. We had been training this militia, this rag-tag group of locals with minimal success. Now we expected them to protect an American diplomat in their home country. In this country where money is very powerful we are buying these people's loyalty. Even with money in their pockets the "bad guys" are still people they have seen around town, or know personally. If money is going to be the driving force behind the militia what will keep them from deserting the embassy when they are really needed?
This was proven true on Sept 11, 2012. An al-quada group had targeted the embassy and easily wreaked havoc since the militia was no where to be found. While these terrorists stormed the consulate building and used diesel fuel to torch the building and grounds. Multiple distress calls were sent out from the compound begging for back up from anywhere close.
Less than a mile away at the CIA annex there was a team of highly trained operatives that had been contracted as a security team for the annex. Although they were not there to care for the ambassador, they were the only people close enough to help. They could see and hear the destruction that was taking place but were repeatedly told not to engage in the conflict. Eventually this team of men decided they must help their fellow Americans because no one else was coming. After engaging with the rebels they attempted to secure the compound. This is when they found the body of Sean Smith who was killed when the rebels set fire to the building he was in. At this point the ambassador can't be found, but the team assumed him dead. It is late discovered that Libyan bystanders had tried to save him by taking him to the hospital but it was not successful.
As if this wasn't enough, the team returns to the annex with the Americans they could a few hours before this compound also came under attack. Again a distress call was made, begging for someone to come to their aid. During this attack two more Americans lost their lives: Glen Doherty and Tyrone S. Woods.
It was clear that these attacks had been planned by a terrorist group, despite how it was explained to the American people. A lot of questions came up about this ordeal. Why wasn't the embassy prepared or up to code? Why wasn't there any support for them? Why was the truth not told to the people? Why were we even there in the first place when it had been proven to be dangerous? Who made the call to hold back? Who green lighted the entire thing? Why did it take so long for the FBI to investigate it later?
This dark mark in our recent history should be a wake up call to many Americans. How much do you really know? Are we being lied to? There is information out there we must recognize that and demand it. If only you take the time to find accurate information you can piece together the truth.
