What My First Year as a Transfer Student Taught Me

I still have a lot to learn.

What My First Year as a Transfer Student Taught Me

As I decided to take on this journey, I never imagined how much my life would be changed. I had attended community college for two years, and my views of the world had only been altered in minimal ways. I always saw the world as a classroom. Every event is meant to teach you and help you grow. I chose community college for money purposes, and although it is seen as a negative choice, it was one of the best I ever made.

As I traveled out of state to begin my two year journey at a university, I had very limited ideas of what would happen to me. I never realized why people were so afraid to leave home. After one year, I realized that being away from home is not for everyone. It takes so much out of you and completely pulls you out of your comfort zone and drops you into this world full of adventures and misfortunes. You have to somehow figure it out.

Here is my advice for incoming transfer students.

Do not over estimate your will power.

Being older sometimes does not make you any wiser. Watch your actions and be careful with the people that surround you. Although we think we might have everything under control, sometimes life wants to knock you down. If you come from a strict and conservative home like I do, do not go crazy over your new found freedom because it will soon wear you down. Have fun but remember you still have three more years to go.

Never give up.

Starting from scratch is going to throw you many loops and turns. This is the time where you discover yourself no matter your age. So much is going to be thrown at you and you have to be ready to fall on your face a couple of times. I did. You just have to get back up and don't be afraid to ask for help because some things we can't deal with all alone.

Try new things.

Coming into college a little older, we get stuck in our ways and habits. We also think it is too late for us to join a club or team, but it is not. I rushed Greek life as a junior and although in some schools that it a little harder, it wasn't at mine. I was terrified of being rejected because of my age, but I wasn't. It ultimately became another great choice. I fell in love with my chapter and met the most amazing individuals in Greek life. I also joined clubs outside of Greek life and found even more amazing individuals who are writers, artists, athletes and people who just have amazing personalities.

If it isn't for you, that's okay.

Like I said before, going away isn't for everybody. If you try it out and don't feel at home, or dislike being there, then it isn't for you. It is okay to leave and go back home. I discovered that although I got homesick and sad, I loved living on my own. It helped me realize that traveling is something I want in my career. Do what makes you overall happier than sad.

In the end, being a transfer student is just being a much older freshman, and it is a whole new world. Just remember...you get out of it what you put into it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
