What Minimum Wage Workers Want To Say But Can't

We'd probably be fired if we did.

What Minimum Wage Workers Want To Say But Can't

We live in a society where it is not uncommon for teens and college students to work at least one minimum wage job at some point during their youth. Whether it be in fast food or retail, these jobs are some of the best places to learn how to deal with people. Why? Because we deal with some crazy people with unreasonable requests, yet all we can say is "I understand you're upset but..." only to get yelled at more. If only we could say what is really on our minds.

We don't make the prices so please don't yell at us for them.

We are basically the middle man. We have no control over any of the prices and frankly you yelling at us over them isn't going to change them. Maybe next time you should look at the price before deciding to buy whatever it is you're buying.

The customer is NOT always right.

You using that phrase to get what you want just makes us less likely to do everything we can to help you. Especially when you order vanilla ice cream in the drive thru that three people heard, but then insist that you said chocolate. Because three people are completely wrong. Our bad.

Don't mess up the clothes.

We spend quite a bit of time making sure that clothes are all folded and piled neatly. Sometimes it'll take us 30 minutes to an hour to do it just so you can come and rip out a shirt from the bottom causing the pile to collapse. And then dropping the shirt you pulled out on the top.

We are closing in 5 minutes. Get. Out.

If you're one of the people that goes into a place of business five minutes before, chances are the employees kind of hate you. At this point, all we want to do is close and go home. There's a lot of work that goes into closing and we have to wait until you leave to do it. So please, get out!

Don't be a jerk.

Everyone has bad days, I get that, but you shouldn't make someone else's day crappy just because yours was. You also should not belittle, speak down to, or be rude to the people that are handling your sale or your food. Think about that for a second. We handle your food. A lot could happen with that...

There's plenty of other things that could be on this like having your method of payment ready when you've been waiting in line forever. However, for the sake of this not turning into a rant, I'll end it here. Remember this next time you're dealing with someone who doesn't get paid enough to put up with your crap.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
