Robert Bryson Hall II, better known to the music industry as hip-hop artist "Logic," has recently made heads turn after his brilliant performance at MTV's annual Video Music Awards (VMAs). Until his performance Sunday evening, many people may or may not have known who Logic is; while Logic has maintained a steady and loyal fan base after his popular album "Under Pressure," without a doubt, Logic has lacked the recognition that he certainly deserves.
As many people may not have known, Logic comes from a broken-down, poor family with a past of drug and alcohol addiction; his parents and his brothers all fell to the temptation and weakness of their neighborhood. Logic, who grew up without a father figure in his life, was raised by his troubled mother in an equally troubled neighborhood in Maryland.
But what many people may not know is that Logic felt the presence of both worlds. Being the son of an African-American father and a white mother, he felt the racial discrimination of being a minority while feeling the superiority of being a white child. For Logic, race has become one of the most important themes in his music because he simply understands the importance for equality and for people to feel powerful and safe under their skin.
Logic on Sunday evening performed his hit song "1-800-273-8255" alongside Alessia Cara and Khalid from his third officially released album "Everybody". This album focuses on the themes of race, inequality, suicide and depression. His song "1-800-273-8255" focused on the concept of how anxiety and depression can lead to a suicidal state; the song was named after the suicide-help hotline number. Logic shared a universal message that wasn't unique, but it was certainly necessary. Logic's message is loud and clear: no one is ever going to be alone, and there will always be someone willing to listen and someone willing to help, even if it's a stranger across the hotline number.
After Logic's performance, Logic was joined onstage by suicide survivors wearing white T-shirts that had the suicide hotline number printed on the front with the message "You Are Not Alone" printed on the back. He ended the night off with a giant hug to those very victims, and he asked Americans and the world to join him in making society a place of equality and love.
His message might just be one of the strongest that I've personally seen in any recent song and definitely in the genre of hip-hop and was highlighted on stage. While he made plenty of people in the audience and at home shed a tear, he showed that he's not just any mainstream rapper.
Logic showed the music industry that his words and his music are thoughtful, considerate, and, most of all, real. His songs highlight real life problems, and through this great music, he's looking to make a change in the world.
Although I don't blame people for not having known the true character behind the rapper, I will say to give him a chance and listen to his albums. Logic's words are powerful, and he shouldn't be left in the shadow in the rap industry, because, to be honest, his talent is beyond average and is beyond the mainstream. He's one of the most heartfelt artists in the music industry, and he should be getting the recognition he deserves.
