My brother rocks. Seriously, in terms of big brothers, I don’t think I could’ve been given a better one. He is my best friend, mentor and support system all rolled into one amazing sibling. I was so excited about going to college with him, since we hadn’t gone to school together since I was in the fourth grade. But it's not really what I expected. Here’s what it’s really like to attend the same university as your sibling.
Seeing them on campus is like seeing a ghost, especially if you go to a bigger college. They’re probably pretty grateful that no one is around to see the huge hug you give them.
But then when you see them at a party, all you want to do is hide. Until you realize that they aren’t your parent, so they can’t technically get mad. But you avoid them anyways.
Going to dinner with them is never brief. After all, you tell them pretty much everything. The gossip is almost always better than the food.
Making plans with them is more difficult than your Calc class. When you both basically live in the library, seeing each other can be a challenge.
Whenever you see them with their significant other, you freak out a little bit on the inside. Sometimes you enjoy seeing their boyfriend/girlfriend more than seeing your sibling.
But then when they see pictures of you with someone of the opposite gender, 20 questions always follow. (The first time my brother saw me with a boy in the library, I think he had a tiny heart attack.)
Even though you meet a ton of new people everyday, more than likely you’re going to run into someone that recognizes your last name. (~sigh~ “Yes, I’m his sister.”)
But secretly, it makes you feel like a little celebrity.
It’s easy to get annoyed when they try to give you advice, because it’s college and you get to do whatever you want.
And then it’s equally annoying when you have to tell them they were right all along.
At the end of the day, you’re so happy to have them just a phone call away. After all, college is hard enough and having a sibling there makes it soooo much better (even though you'd never admit that to them).
