What It's Like Being Pale in the Summer

Summer is considered the optimal time for adventurous outdoor activities, traveling to fun destinations and spending the dog days soaking up the sun. Most days consist of laying out by the pool, frequenting the local fro-yo shops and most importantly getting some much needed color. For many people, the summer is a favorite season simply because it allows for them to work on their tans by spending hours in the sun. But, then there are us folk with sensitive skin that find the summer as a minefield of activities. Below are some scenarios any paste-y person has encountered during the sunny summer days.

1. When the summer has just begun and you have a few more glorious days of chilly, rainy weather to excuse the long sleeves and jeans.

Everyone is complaining about the cold weather and how they can't wait for the heat, but you're having an internal party. I'm so freakin' excited no one has seen my translucent skin just yet.

2. When the heat has actually arrived and you are still holding onto the possibility of a freak mid-season snowstorm in order to prolong the time before you have to expose your skin in public.

What actually happens is excruciating internal heat waves that make you feel like you've started pre-menopause, while also attempting to play it off.

3. When your friends ask you to go tanning at the pool and you are forced to get creative with the reasons why you can't go.

Ahhhhhh...I need to, eh, practice my thing...indoors.

4. When you finally decide to go to the pool and start putting on the layers of sunscreen required to not spontaneously combust.

I'm Casper the friendly ghost.

5. When both your parents tell you about their younger days tanning, and to this day still manage to tan better than you without even stepping out into the sun.

Am I adopted?

6. When you are forced to leave your air conditioned house for some reason and step into the blazing sun, unprepared for how hot the summer had become while you were hiding inside.

Tell me the truth, is my face on fire?

7. When your friends suggest you try self tanner to cover up your paleness.

You know that ship has sailed awhile ago and you are a lifetime member of Team Paste-y, but you do it to appease their requests as you know they mean well.Yes, I've always wanted to look like a calico cat.

8. When you realize you forgot to put on sunscreen, but it's too late to go back. You step out into the blinding light and accept your cruel fate.

WHAT HAVE I DONE!?

9. When you get back from your sunny adventures outside and your parents ask how your day went.

I guess it was fun hanging out with friends too.

10. When your friends are all talking about their sunny beach vacations for the summer.

They express how excited they are to finally get rid of their "paste-y skin" while you sit there, the palest of everyone. "Yes, I can't wait to get rid of this paleness. Oh wait, I can't."

11. When you eventually do end up getting sunburned and turn into a living fire hydrant.

Everywhere you go feels like you've announced your presence as your skin is practically radiating the heat for the room. BRING IN THE DANCING LOBSTERS!!!!

12. When you go out to eat and your friends ask where you'd like to sit.

I don't want to be warmer than my meal, thank you.

13. When you finally encounter a fellow pale person out in public.

I know how you feel, I know how you feel.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
