A Girl Who Lifts

The barbell never lies.

A Girl Who Lifts
Jen Bretty

I love to lift weights. I love powerlifting (squat, deadlift and bench) and Olympic lifting (clean and jerk and snatch). I can even consider loving bicep curls, which are pretty much the least athletically useful movement that has ever existed.

I started lifting in high school when I participated in high jump for my high school's track team. Being an athlete has always defined me, since the sixth grade when I joined my first sport, and now, as a college athlete and Crossfit lover. Gradually, being a gym rat has become more of an identity for me as I learned more about lifting and got stronger. Here's what I've learned from my favorite hobby.

Lifting has changed my mindset as an athlete, especially as a female athlete. Frequently, I hear teammates or other women talk about their bodies negatively: they wish they were skinnier, or their stomachs were flatter, or whatever it is they've decided they don't like about themselves on that particular day. I see someone eating a single chicken breast for dinner, or skipping breakfast after morning weights, or talking about the newest diet to lose weight.

Lifting has allowed me to let go of all of that, because I want to be strong. Muscles aren't built by five pieces of lettuce with low-fat dressing, but by a balanced and nutritious diet with plenty of calories. In a world where dieting and being overweight are topics of discussion and worries for other people, I get to enjoy eating because I know it's helping me reach my goals.

I don't look in the mirror and see anything negative. I see strong quads and hamstrings that power through the final set of squats. I see traps that I can hold my barbell on. I see callouses on my hands that protect me during my workouts. My body is mine to build and form, not the product of anyone else's opinion or pressure, and that's a beautiful feeling.

The most important thing I have learned from lifting, though, is that the barbell will never lie. Fifty or 100 or 150 pounds will always be the same weight, but what changes is me. Even if I've had a bad day, or gotten a bad grade, or taken a week off, the barbell will still be there waiting, and it won't let me down. The cool, rough metal will always be a welcome feeling in my hands, even as my lungs and muscles burn. The barbell will always be a challenge, it will always be tough, it will always give me something to focus on and strive for. And the barbell will always be there for me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
