The avocado has made its big appearance on the health food stage and its reputation as the “it-food” doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Realizing I am not alone in my infatuation got me thinking how mine began in the first place. When I was a little kid, I would always eat the avocado off of my dad’s sandwiches. One day, for some reason unbeknownst to me, I decided they were no longer palatable and for the next ten years I refused to eat avocados. After recently giving them another try, my relationship with this little green super food escalated from simple enjoyment to a love affair and finally into a full blown obsession.
It started out innocently enough. The sandwich I wanted from Panera had an avocado spread and I was feeling adventurous (and too lazy to ask them to take it off). After that first bite, I could not remember why on earth I had sworn against avocados and just like that they found their way into my life again.
It didn’t get serious right away, just a couple run-ins on sandwiches here and there, occasionally throwing some glances their way at Publix. The day I decided to make the first move and buy some for myself was the day my obsession truly began, and I don’t think I will ever walk out of a grocery store without avocados again.
For those of you wondering what us avocado freaks feel, here is a little insight into what our lives are like. When you transition from appreciation to full-fledged obsession you see food differently. Avocados become a daily staple and every meal you wonder to yourself “How can I incorporate avocado into this?” You always have an avocado on hand and if, God forbid, you ever go to reach for one and find that you have none left your heart breaks just a little. You then make a mental note to stock up on your next grocery run.
Looking over a menu and seeing anything avocado-related gets you overly excited and if there is the option to add it there is not a moment of hesitation. So it goes without saying that guac is never a question. Yes, sir, I know it’s extra.
"Avocado" anything gives you pure childlike joy, like finding an avocado shaped (and scented) soap bar.
Even saying the word avocado makes you grin.
Your Google search history is overloaded with avocado-related articles from recipes to health facts to facial masks, all of which you bookmark for that one imaginary day in the future when you get around to actually trying them.
In fact, you spend so much time reading about avocados you begin to consider yourself an expert on the subject.
You convince yourself that with so many health benefits there can’t possibly be a problem with eating a whole avocado a day, which you acknowledge is slightly ridiculous at the same time...
...Leading you to decide to lower your avocado intake but after a day of no green deliciousness the cravings kick in and before you know it you’re toasting some bread for the snack of all snacks: avocado toast.
If you’re anywhere near as obsessed as I am, the avocado has slowly but surely made itself a part of your self-identity but as far as obsessions go I can’t think of a better one to have.
