What I Learned In My First Semester At SEMO

Three Cheers for SEMO!

What I Learned In My First Semester At SEMO

1. GO TO CLASS

I thought I could get away missing a couple classes here and there but I didn't and I'm in a big hole because of it.

2. The food at Towers is not that bad

As much as people say they hate towers food, I don't think its that bad. Yes, it could be better, but there is good food there sometimes.

3. Avoid Cardiac Hill

A friend of mine once told me to avoid cardiac hill like the black plague. There is nothing worse that having to walk up cardiac hill after throwing up all day with 101.2 degree fever because its the fastest way to get to the clinic.

4. Talk to your RA

My RA has become one of my best friends and I tell him everything. Their job is not to tell on you or judge you so don't be afraid to talk to them.

5. You can meet friends anywhere

Some of my best friends I met because I was on one of my best friend's floor all the time and I just became part of the floor. Introduce yourself and try to make friends with everybody.

6. Not everyone is going to like you

There are people everywhere that might not like you and you're just going to have to accept that because it's life.

7. Do your homework

I know it sounds more fun to go out on t-shirt Tuesdays and thirsty Thursdays, and you still can. But do your homework before you go, because the worst thing is waking up after a night of fun to realize you missed an 50 point paper that you were supposed to turn in at 11:55 last night.

8. Be social

Yes, it's good to have alone time sometimes, but don't spend your whole college experience watching Netflix in your dorm and eating Easy Mac. Hang out with friends, join a club, rush a frat or sorority. Just be social.

9. Leave your door open when you're in your room

Leaving your door open is the best way to make new friends on your floor. Even if you're just studying and listening to music, someone might enjoy the same music as you and you might just meet your best friend.

10. Subway will always be crowded

You could be going at 12 or 6 but its gonna be crowded no matter what time. If your in a rush Subway is probably not the best choice.

11. Go to the football games

I know we aren't a big football school like Mizzou or the other big colleges but the games are still fun. You can still tailgate and its just fun to support your school.

12. SEMO IS AMAZING

I can't think of a better school for me than SEMO after being here. I have never been so happy, determined, and just plain grateful that I get to go to such an amazing school. Thank you SEMO for making me the happiest I have ever been.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
