15 Things I Learned From Being "The Chubby Kid"

Every Stretch Mark Is A Badge Of Honor

15 Things I Learned From Being "The Chubby Kid"
Kelsey Weiss

1. You will never be able to wear the same “cool” clothes as your peers.

Face it, as the chubby kid, you could never shop where everyone else did. Aeropostale and Limited Too (Justice now) were not kind to the kids who couldn’t fit into a small shirt.

2. Body shaming will begin early in life.

My first “body shaming” experience happened early in elementary school. One of my classmate's moms said that I shouldn’t be wearing my Halloween costume because it wasn’t made for “someone of my size.”

3. Being called “fat” becomes less of an insult and more of an adjective.

This may be difficult to learn early in life, but being called fat finally loses its meaning after the 800th time you've heard it. That seemed to be the go-to insult early in my life.

4. You will outgrow the kids section in elementary school.

As far back as I can remember, I was a 14/16 in kids clothes. I remember beginning to shop in the women’s section in Old Navy before I hit an age with more than one digit.

5. Kids are cruel.

As stated previously, I was called fat A LOT. But worse things would happen. I would be “too big” to participate in games on the playground. I was told I would crush my smaller classmates if I fell at recess.

6. The general public isn’t that nice either.

It wasn’t just people I knew who would comment on my weight. Out in public, I would get stares and fingers pointed at me. Sometimes while in stores, I would hear the employees whispering about how I shouldn’t be shopping there.

7. Sport uniforms are not made for you.

Nearly every year they would have to order me a new cheerleading uniform because they never had one big enough for me.

8. Sports might not necessarily be made for you either.

Let’s be honest, fat kids can’t run well. And what does every sport include? RUNNING!

9. You will need to wear a bra before most of your peers.

Early development comes with being heavy. I had to begin wearing a bra in the third grade because of this.

10. You essentially grow up before everyone else.

Not only do you develop boobs quicker than anyone else, but you also might get your period first, too.

11. More clothing is not always the answer.

Covering up the chub is not always a good idea. Especially swim shirts, please don’t wear a swim shirt. The shirt gets wet and clings and it makes you look worse.

12. People will tell you what to wear; don’t listen.

Don’t let the fact that others have a different concept of what will look good on your body type stop you from wearing whatever the hell you want!

13. There won’t be many role models to look up to.

Until recently, us chubby girls didn’t have anyone to look up to. Now we thankfully have Ashley Graham and Tess Holliday to show us that big can be beautiful.

14. Not eating is not the answer.

NOT EATING WILL NOT SOLVE ANY ISSUES! Eating disorders are dangerous and are becoming way too prevalent in our societies and they really shouldn’t.

15. To love my body.

Until about two years ago, I never felt beautiful in my own skin. I would try to cover my body at all costs. But then I realized--I am healthy. I am not obese or overweight, which are not bad things either. I have earned every one of my stretch marks. I call them my tiger stripes, and I am covered in them. I have finally earned my stripes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
