Being a best friend is a privilege, one that I'm blessed with. Over the past couple years, I've learned a lot about friendship. This is what being a best friend means to me.
Being a best friend means you listen. You listen to their plans of marrying the hot guy at school, or all the reasons why they can't stand that one person. You listen to why they got in a fight with their parents, or something funny their siblings said. You listen to the angry rants and the crying. You listen to their dreams and hopes and what's important to them. You listen to it all.
Being a best friend means you talk. You talk about literally everything, no matter how weird or deep or crazy. You talk about school and the future. You talk about the past and your mistakes. You talk about the things you can't admit to anyone else, like why you can't seem to move on from that one boy, or why you still feel really insecure sometimes. You talk about what you're afraid and what makes you happier than anything. You barely ever run out of things to say, but when you do, you let the silence speak just as much as the words.
Being a best friend means you care. You want them to be happy more than anything because you can't stand to see them upset. Your world isn't as bright without their smile. This means putting in that extra effort, like writing them a sweet note or getting them their favorite candy when they're feeling down. It's the little things that count the most. You care that they're okay, or at least that they will be, and you care about getting them there.
Being a best friend means you have to forgive. You have to put aside the little fights or disagreements and remember that you probably would go crazy without them. You have to realize that you'll probably never find another person who understands you like they do or someone who can cheer you up like they can.
Being a best friend means you believe. No matter how out of reach their goals might seem, you have to be their best motivator and their number one fan, You have to build them up and believe in them when they don't want to believe in themselves. Support them through all the stress, tears and sweat until they reach their goals, and then celebrate like crazy because their victories are your victories too.
Being a best friend means you trust. Trusting someone can be hard, especially if things haven't worked out in the past, but any kind of relationship, especially friendship, is built on trust. They can make promises and you know they'll keep them. You can tell them all your secrets and know they'll never tell anyone. You trust that they'll always be there for you, and that you'll always be there for them.
Being a best friend means you love. You love your best friend unconditionally. You love them when they're sad and broken just as much as you love them when they're happy and successful. You love them through all their bad days and all their good days. You love them more than any boy that could ever try to come between you. You love them because their your person, and you couldn't handle life without them by your side.
