A little over a year ago I wrote a poem, and I just found it again on my computer. I forgot why I wrote it, but I remember being proud of it. I'm not really a writer of poetry, but I liked the idea of sharing it and its message with other people.
What I'm Made Of
I am made of the earth
I am made of the sky
I am made of warmth
I am made from goodbyes
I'm from small towns
I'm from storytelling
I'm from people
I'm from there
I am composed of beliefs
I am composed of aspirations
I am composed of thoughts
I am composed of experience
People think I'm shy
People think I don't know
People think I'm too young
People think I'm different
They don't know how much I dream
They don't know how much I care
They don't know how much I worry
They don't know how much I love
I love keys and locks
I love cloudy days
I love watching the sunrise
I love long walks
I'd risk it all for life
I'd risk it all for hope
I'd risk it all for the moon
I'd risk it all for you
I am made of the air
I am made of the stars
I am made of the wind
I am made from hellos
But they won't know that
Unless I tell them
Often, people feel misunderstood and like nobody cares about what they think. I know that it feels that way sometimes and I think it's important to know you're not alone in that feeling. You feel like you are constantly being judged about your personality and the choices you make, but it's important to know that it doesn't matter what people who don't really know you think about you. You are who you are, and nobody can take that away from you. They have no control over what makes you you. I struggle constantly with reminding myself that I am who I am, and I don't need to change to please the people around me. I'm made of so many things that make me completely unique and unlike anyone else. It's so beautiful that in the world no two people are exactly the same, because all people are composed of different backgrounds and experiences. What you are made of is awesome and perfect and so wonderfully special.
