What If Rush Were Different?

9

Every year, sorority recruitment at Alabama is very talked about. The topic floods into news outlets all over the country, and let’s be honest -- it’s for a good reason. As an upcoming senior and someone who actually enjoys the recruitment process, I think it’s time to shed some light on what really happens.First, we are going to pile on top of each other and fit in the door frame. Then, we are going to scream some rhyming songs at the girls to welcome them into the house. Next comes the ice water that we will give the girls and maybe even spill a little bit. Then, we will sit and chat about some trivial things such as, “Where are you living?” or “Do you know your roommate?” This is really just an icebreaker because who really cares about these things? What we really want to know is -- will you be involved in the house? Are you a girl who is going to embarrass us when you have a little too much to drink? Will you steal anyone else's boyfriend? And, more importantly, are you going to drop after a year of pledging?

These questions are the reasons that sorority recruitment would go smoothly if we did what fraternities do.

If sororities adopted these ideas, here is how it would go:
It would be a free for all, so the girls who go in and don't want to be there, wouldn't have to come. So, everyone is interested. That's a good start.

Next is free alcohol. This is a good test to see if the rushees can handle their alcohol. Will you throw up? Fall over? If they can handle the alcohol, then it is a good sign. There will be an endless beer pong match, so the test of the rushees aim and team spirit will be taken into account.

We also want to know about their personalities. Are they artsy or preppy? Do they have good manners? Is their laugh contagious or annoying? All of these subconscious things are found out by one night at a party.

Then, the process of bids come in to play. If we like the girl, we will get a group of people and some executive members and take them into a room and offer them a bid. They can either accept or hold onto it and then decide.

After all the bids are given out, there is a wait process, and then we will find out who has accepted bids. Our hand-picked, alcohol-tolerating, polite and pretty new pledges. Wouldn't everything be easy if this was how it worked?

But, by any means, we go through the process every year, and while it may be a long and challenging few weeks, it is still a necessary evil to continue the growth in our chapters.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
