What Harry Potter Taught Me That Muggle School Never Did

After growing up with Harry Potter, sometimes it can be difficult to accept a world without him.

I have been “that kid” since I discovered the Harry Potter world. When I first started reading them, there were only three books and no movies. I remember being captivated and absorbing all I could in the quickest way possible. I just wanted more and more and more! Over time, the rest of the books came out, along with the movies. And sometimes it’s still hard for me to believe there won’t be any more. I’ve had friends who’ve never seen or read the books, and to you, I am sorry. For those of you who understand the Harry Potter world, you will be able to relate to the list I have compiled. For those of you who never had the opportunity, you will be able to have a glimpse into what you have been missing out on your whole life.

1. Good always wins over evil—even when certain death is involved and defeat seems inevitable.

2. You can love someone of the other sex without being in love with them.

3. Sometimes it really is a good idea to think before you speak.

4. Hardships and hurt feels can help you grow more than a perfect life can.

5. Grief and loss are a part of life, yet you can always find happiness.

6. Always be accepting of others, even if they aren’t popular or appear normal.

7. Don’t ever be ashamed of your scars—they helped shape who you are.

8. Anyone has the power to change their circumstances, and ultimately, their life.

9. Chocolate can fix anything.

10. Never isolate yourself from your best friends.

11. There are some people in your life that simply can’t be replaced.

12. Always stand for what is right, even if you think you stand alone.

13. You are who you choose to be despite your downfalls.

14. Those who are different from you are still entitled to their opinions.

15. Love lasts while few other things do.

16. Always forgive, even if it’s just for your sanity.

17. It’s the everyday, simple choices that determine our destiny.

18. There is never an excuse to be mean or condescending to another.

19. Sometimes you need to rely on others to succeed.

20. Great knowledge is attained when great sacrifice and time is given.

21. Life without love is barely a life at all.

22. Reading can save your life.

23. Outside appearances can sometimes hide the most beautiful things.

24. There are causes worth dying for, but none worth killing for.

25. People are not born evil.

26. Obsession will rot your mind.

27. Curiosity is a good thing.

28. Most of the time, all you really need is a good laugh.

29. Bold is beautiful.

30. There is nothing stronger than a mother’s love for her child.

I could probably go on for days! All of these and so much more have helped shape how I hope to live my life and who I want to be. I just want to end by bringing up my favorite quote from all seven books by none other than Albus Dumbledore:

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
