What Happens At The Kids' Table

What Happens At The Kids' Table
Colleen O'Malley

You're 22 years old and almost a college graduate. Every Thanksgiving day you wonder where on Earth the time has gone. It seems like just yesterday you were coloring in the turkey coloring page with your cousins and family friends.

The conversations varied from who was cute on the playground, to what we wanted to put on our Christmas lists. Each year, major milestones are passed: first tooth you lost, first steps, and the first time you went to kindergarten. All you wanted for Christmas were your two front teeth.

Your mom pulls out the Thanksgiving Family Game, and everyone goes around answering crazy questions that start off with what you're thankful for.

Of course as a kid, you were thankful for the little things -- like the cherry popsicle your dad let you have for dessert the night before or that Barbie doll your mom got you for being good at the dentist.

As the years progressed, the kids' table conversation changed to young adult topics like driver's ed, first kisses, and the thrill of being able to go away to college.

The things you were thankful for in those years grew a little bit bigger: significant others, best friends, and family. Granted you were also thankful for the invention of Snapchat, but the family and friends mattered too.

And this year, you are thankful for something different. You're thankful for all of the memories you've made every Thanksgiving: that time your mom called 1-800-BUTTERBALL because she thought she left the giblet bag inside, that time you and your best friend won the family Taboo tournament, or even that first Thanksgiving you brought a boy home.

As the years at the kids' table come to a close, you realize that it's not the kids table that's actually dissipating: it's just the name. The kids' table will eventually revolutionize into the adult table and whole new generation will start playing the Family Thanksgiving Game. You can only hope that one day they'll be thankful for their memories and family just like you were.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
