What Happened To Passion?

Studies show people aren't as passionate about life as they used to be.

When you think of passion you think of relationships and inappropriate things. Passion in relationships is great, and it's something that people should have. However, passion is defined as: "strong and barely controllable emotion."

Now, I am a very passionate person. I am passionate about a lot of things. Racial equality, my relationships, my love for my family, dogs, women's rights, the fact that college does not correlate to success, and many other things.

The point is that people don't seem to be passionate about things anymore. People don't care. They go about life, and they are zombies. No one seems to put passion into things.

We are moved from high school and ushered into college like it is a necessity to be great in life. Then we are asked to put ourselves in debt to pick one thing to do for the rest of our lives, but do we pick a passion?

Do we pick something we are passionate about, or do we choose something that is simple and makes money?

I for one never thought about passion when I considered a career. I thought, this sounds fun, and it will be solid money. It's in high demand, so I'll always have work.

Why is that though?

Why do we choose simple and monetary things in place of passion?

Passion cannot be replaced with money.

I have heard it's hard to be happy on a jet ski, and that's true. However, it's hard to be happy going to work in a profession we are not passionate about.

It's not easy to choose your passion at 18 years old. It's not easy to do that. it's not easy to know what you want to do for the rest of your life at 18 years old.

I guess that's why I have tried many different roads.

Maybe that's also why the other half of the "jack of all trades" quote ends in "oftentimes better than a master of one."

Maybe, the fact that not all of us settle for things we aren't passionate about, is a good thing. Maybe some of us find our passions early on, and that's great. It doesn't happen to everyone though.

Which is fine. If you have to look through ten different careers before you find your passion, that's okay. Don't be afraid to find your passion. It's important to be passionate. It's important to know. I mean, you don't marry someone you just met. Why would you commit to a career that you barely know anything about. You know?

So, be passionate. Never stop wanting to do what you love. Let that passion drive you, and don't settle for mediocre. You deserve passion. You deserve to feel passionately about your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
