What Will Happen When Gay Marriage is Legalized

What Will Happen When Gay Marriage is Legalized
Demi Lovato's "Really Don't Care"

On June 26, 2014 all fifty states legalized same-sex marriage. Whatever side you are on, it was a huge ordeal. To those of you directly affected; Congratulations! Your long, tiresome fight is finally over and you are free to be with whom you truly love. I can only begin to imagine how you feel about this decision. But don’t think that religions are bad things, or people who are religious are bad people. I have seen many people who bash religion, or someone’s beliefs because they feel like they are shoving those beliefs down a person’s throat. You could be mistaken. If you want someone to understand your beliefs, why don’t you try the same courtesy?

To those of you who are appalled calling it wrong in the eyes of God, yes, to some religions it is ‘wrong’ and a ‘sin’. And to those quoting the Bible with “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female” Leviticus 18:22.

Or how about “...Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers shall inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Well I don’t know about you, but I have been drunk before, and I’m pretty lazy so I guess that means that I’ll be joining the community of not inheriting the Kingdom.

The one thing that really upsets me about this entire thing is using religion as an excuse. I’m sorry, but did everyone miss the first day of Bible school where they told us the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Also in the Bible: Luke 6:31. Regardless of my thoughts on marriage equality, I try to practice this everyday. I would not want my feelings to be diminished by a court ruling because I’m ‘not normal’. To those of you who are so close minded, I would like you to take just one second to grasp an understanding of what it must feel like to be thought of as a sinner just for who you are. Do you realize that you are diminishing everyday people just because you don’t understand it? There are a lot of things I don’t understand, but I won’t say that it’s wrong. Maybe it is, and maybe it’s not; but last time I checked, not one of us has ever spoken, seen, or even knows if Heaven, hell, or God exist.

I am not directly affected by the legalization, so I have no opinion. All I can say is that we need to become a less ignorant society. There are children dying over countless issues, and some insignificant problems should not control out emotions; use those emotions for example to bring our troops home. Marriage should not be a huge controversy. As long as marriage is being treated like marriage, who are we to say what is right or wrong.

So I say again, to those affected, Congratulations and I hope you live happy, long lives with your loved ones.

To those upset, I’m sorry that you lost your fight and I hope you will respect the decision

To all, I hope you start to live a more understanding life, considerate of different beliefs.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
