Deciding on a college major is kind of a big deal. While you are not required to stay in that industry after college, you are chained to your chosen field for the four years you learn about it. Although many major choices come attached with a bad reputation, the one that gets the brunt of eye rolls are the art majors. Art has always been pushed away as more of a hobby than a career choice. With every new decade, a new wave of art forms comes tumbling into the wide expanse of art majors. Art majors constantly get attacked with invalid points about their career path. Here are a few examples and just how you can combat them.
You won’t make any money.
Art is in high demand. The demand for one-of-a-kind creations to adorn the walls of our homes is constant. With such a wide array of styles and techniques, no art seeker will walk away with a hand-crafted piece for a cheap price.
You will never find a stable job.
Whether it is painting murals for local businesses or designing book covers for new authors, art is everywhere and needed to perform many other important jobs. Imagine a world without graphic designers or photographers. Museums without paintings and sculptures would be a little less exciting.
Not everyone is into art.
This point is a tricky one because while it is true for some, others find it hard to handle. A school system without art programs and dedicated art teachers instructing students on how to create. This is the stepping stone into the world of exploring all the art world has to offer.
You should be in business instead.
While learning the business side of things is essential in making it big to sell your art, it is not always the best choice for most creative minds. College is a time to perfect your trade. Majoring in art is a great way to learn from seasoned professionals and take in old and new techniques.
You’ll never make it.
This is the one that always bothered me the most. Telling a college student that they won’t make it in the industry is equivalent to telling them they are not good enough. Art is full of opinions and thankfully, everyone has a different one when it comes to art. There is always someone in the market for exactly your style of work.
Art is beauty. It is the creative medium that inspires so many other careers. To every aspiring artist out there, don’t let people tear down your dreams. Just because they don’t have the same desire to create beautiful things doesn’t mean you have to give up yours. Dive head first into the art world. Prove them all wrong. Show everyone who questioned your decision that you made the right choice and you are in it for the long haul.
