We've grown accustomed to obsessing over milestones as we get older. The first birthday as a child is one of the biggest. I mean you've spent a whole year on this earth, with a vast future ahead of you. Your fifth birthday's probably not as important, but hey now you can probably count, talk and walk. You probably have a sassy attitude. Fast forward to age 16 and you haven't outgrown that attitude. You think you're wise and an "adult." But what exactly does that mean?
In just a couple of months I'll be 20 years old. I would have spent two decades on this earth and to me that is a huge milestone. Being 20 means entering the dreary, never-ending adulthood. Since I started college, the process is technically already starting. I had to start making my own doctor appointments. The idea of being responsible weighs heavily and I simply pay one bill per month.
It might seem like light work and I will admit that it is. Some people pay more bills than me, own their own place and have to rely solely on themselves for anything. Then there are people like me who are just confused.
When I was younger I thought that being an adult would be easy. I would always have money in my pocket and I would have my own place. I wouldn't have to rely on my parents and life would just be great. But life does not go the way you want it. Being an adult isn't just about having money, it's the responsibility that comes with it.
You have to be able to make split decisions and pray that they don't backfire. When we were younger we had our mommies and daddies to fix our mistakes, this time any mistake we make is on us.
I'm grateful to have parents who will always help and provide for me no matter what. But they can't fix every mistake I make, nor can they make these decisions for me. My future is literally in my hands, as it is in yours and that's what makes "adulting" so scary. If we don't make it in this world, we only have ourselves to blame. The tools are there for us to use at our disposal and it's up to us to decide how to use them.
