What Anxiety Actually Is

We each define anxiety in our own ways

What Anxiety Actually Is

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, anxiety is, "apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or anticipated ill." I want you to be aware of signs that you're suffering from anxiety, even though you may not think you are, or you don't want to seek help. The textbook definition makes it seem simple, but anxiety is quite the opposite of that.

Anxiety is needing constant reassurance, even though you've been told the information multiple times.

Anxiety is sending an important text message, not getting a response, and worrying why.

Anxiety is feeling unwanted, even though you're aware you have a support group around you.

Anxiety is only feeling comfortable in your own room, and never wanting to leave.

Anxiety is crying in the middle of the day, and not having a reason behind it.

Anxiety is lying awake at night and not being able to sleep when your mind is racing.

Anxiety is knowing and worrying that you have something important to do, but not having the energy to do it.

Anxiety is going back through your day in your mind and telling yourself what you could have done differently.

Anxiety is feeling alone surrounded by your best friends.

Anxiety is being overwhelmed and not knowing how you control yourself.

Anxiety is feeling your heart rate and breathing increasing.

Anxiety is wondering why a situation that happened years ago occurred the way it did.

Anxiety is anticipating an event that hasn't happened yet, and imagining the worst outcome.

Anxiety is internalizing every emotion you have and never speaking on it.

Anxiety is fearing that others will think you're crazy if you reveal your feelings.

Anxiety is the inability to focus on something while you're busy worrying about something else.

Anxiety is not being able to get out of bed because your mind is exhausted.

Anxiety is telling your friends you're busy, when you really are just staying home.

Anxiety is fretting you aren't good enough for someone, and don't know what to "fix."

Anxiety is you and me, and whole lot of other people, too.

If you are suffering from anxiety, know that there is help out there for you. Know that even though there's a standard definition of the word, we each define anxiety in our own ways. Anxiety is all of those feelings above, plus a million more and counting. Don't be afraid to reach out to a good friend, a family member, or any surrounding resources to seek assistance. Tackle your anxiety with a fighting force, and know you can learn to control it or make it subside over time.

Don't wait before it's too late. There's always someone ready to be in your corner to fight with you and for you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
