Do you ever find yourself in a situation where things just are not clicking, you are feeling completely uncomfortable and you finally ask yourself, “What am I even doing here?”
For example:
Finding yourself in a classroom where your teacher is completely close minded and no one else’s thoughts can be heard.
Finding yourself taking the ACT for the sixth time now, hoping to go up just one more point.
Finding yourself applying for colleges and not even knowing if college is for you.
Finding yourself surrounded by a bunch of drunks who seem like they are not doing anything in their lives at a party, when you are sober and only come for the social event.
Finding yourself at a lame, boring, job that you have been at for months now and still do not see the point in anything that is getting done.
Finding yourself with someone who tears you down, and tells you that your dreams are too big.
Well I’m here to tell you that your dreams are never too big, and the whole point of this is to find yourself.
For one, college is not for everyone. Attend tradesman and vocational school, enlist in the army, travel the world, start at an entry level job, etc. My point is, college is not for everyone so do not be scared to speak up if you feel as if the college path is not the path you are meant to take.
Secondly, you can most certainly have fun without the party scene. Yes, you may feel as if you are being left out, that you are not taking advantage of being young and in college, but there are bigger things in life than a house party. I found myself going to Target, then dinner, then ice cream, and then just walking around with my friends, way more fun than the frat party I attended later that night. I stopped dancing to a song I did not even know, looked around, and found myself completely out of place and asked myself, “What am I even doing here?” My friends were not there, I had tagged along with some girls I had literally just met 30 minutes prior, and I was not drinking. I was bored. I was forcing myself to have a good time because I kept thinking, “If everyone else can be having this much fun, is there something wrong with me because I cannot?”
If you do not take anything from this article, at least take what I am about to say next… Just because you are not doing what everyone else seems to be doing, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. This is not just with college parties and drinking, this is with choosing your own future, doing what you think is enjoyable every night, having your own dance party of just you, listening to your favorite kind of music when you want to, going and exploring places and giving yourself some alone time with your thoughts. This is your life, do not let someone else tell you how to live it.
If you ever find yourself in another situation where you stop what you are doing and ask yourself the “What Am I Even Doing Here?” question, change everything. And do not be scared of the change. The answer is always no unless you ask, just like the opportunity will never be there unless you go after it.
