I Went Up To Random People In The Union, And Here's What Happened

Stranger Danger or new besties????

Every college has the holy place: where the food is. From Chick-fil-a to Starbucks, your school has a place where it is located.

At the Union, you see big groups of people to people sitting by themselves, and both of those are okay and acceptable because it's ya know college. People are different and unique in their own way, so I wanted to get to know a couple of random people in the Union.

The First Victim

Ended up being a friend of a friend (small world right). A sophomore meteorology major from Arkansas, Chris Pipkin and I struck up a conversation. I feel like in college it is necessary to break down walls and just talk to people because everyone wants friends, and just wants to be talked to. I learned that MSU has the closest and best meteorology program, and that is why he chose Mississippi State, which is something I would never have known.

Lucky Participant Number Two

Jonathan Warner is a freshman mechanical engineering major. He and his brother (who goes to a different school) both decided to major in engineering. This new friend of mine was sitting alone and just wanted someone to talk to. I think it is so important to always be open to new people and conversation, and I now have a new friend.

I Was Not Expecting This One

My third and final new friend ended up being apart of the same organization as me!!! How crazy is that!! I got to meet a member of the fam before our first meeting, which was so awesome. Angela is a senior at State who is applying for grad school. She also has a passion for writing and was also excited to meet. If I hadn't challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone I wouldn't have gotten the chance to meet someone before our first club meeting.

It is so important to step out of your comfort zone every once in a while. I challenge whoever is reading this to just go make a new friend. Whether it be in the Union or in class, go up to a nice face and just say hi. It will make their day, and yours because everyone is just looking for communication and to just be heard. You never know how you can impact someone positively if you just be nice.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
