The 2016 Republican National Convention is undeniably distinct from all other conventions. The Republican candidate, Donald Trump, has not only managed to alienate the Muslim community, racial minorities, women, journalists and immigrants, but many GOP members for his unruly demeanor, his xenophobic and racist attitudes and his anti-establishment sentiments. Amidst the cheering, some Republican delegates chanted “roll call vote.” The speakers ranged from Republican governors (four out of the 31 to be precise), billionaires, soap opera and reality TV stars and military officials. The themes for each day included: "Make America Safe Again," "Make America Work Again," "Make America First Again" and "Make America One Again." The highlights of the four-day event included:
1. Melania Trump's Debut Throughout the camp
Unlike Trump's children, Melania Trump had not played a public role in Trump's campaign prior to the convention. Accordingly, her scheduled speech during the RNC was widely anticipated. She told NBC News that “[she] read once over it and that’s all, because [she] wrote it, and with as little help as possible.” Her speech was uplifting and focused on unity. It was later discovered (by an independent journalist) that she plagarized many parts of the speech from Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention Speech.
2. Ted Cruz not endorsing Trump
In a very theatrical fashion, Ted Cruz addressed the convention and talked as though he would endorse Trump. He began by discussing conservative ideology but then surprised everyone by saying “stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.” Sorry Trump, but no endorsement from Lying Ted.
3. Sheriff David Clarke and Condemnation of the Black Lives Matter Movement
Milwaukee Country Sheriff David Clarke harshly criticized the Black Lives Matter Movement for acting as "purveyors of hate" and prompting violence against police officers. He even attributed it to "anarchy."
(The Black Lives Matter movement is not synonymous with anti-police sentiments. Nor does it claim that Black lives are of greater importance than other lives. It exists to dismantle systematic racism and raise awareness about the inequalities still faced by many Black people.)
4. The Rallying Cry of 'Lock Her Up'
Throughout the convention, speakers passionately spoke about their contempt for Hillary Clinton. The mother of a Benghazi victim, Patricia Smith, said that she “[blamed] Hillary Clinton personally for the murder of my son [in Libya in 2012]." Retired Lt. General Mike Flynn encouraged the crowd to continue chanting "lock her up." Some in attendance even sported merchandise that read "Hillary for Prison," "Trump vs Tramp," "Life is a B**** So Don't Vote for One" along with other misogynistic messages.
5. Peter Thiel
A billionaire Silicon Valley entrepreneur, Peter Thiel, attracted attention for being an openly gay speaker at the convention. He argued that the US has been too preoccupied with "fake cultural wars" rather than economic concerns.
6. Use of "We Are the Champions" Despite Queen's Protest
Queen did not want to be associated with the Trump Campaign and criticized their unauthorized use of their popular song. Many strongly believe the late singer Freddie Mercury (who died due from medical issues related to AIDS) would never support Trump.
7. Ivanka Trump's Portrayal of Her Father
Known for her poise and public speaking abilities, Ivanka attempted to humanize her father by expressing her admiration for his fairness and business savvy. She claimed that her father treats everyone alike, despite their gender and race.
8. Donald Trump's Acceptance Speech
Trump's message was consistent with prior speeches. He expressed cynicism for America's current state. He invoked fear based on undocumented immigrants, terrorist threats, international affairs and economic matters. He promised to always present the facts (ironically, enough) and remain truthful to the public. He appeared more tamed than usual as he read from a teleprompter. He concluded with “this is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness.”
