Welcome Back Hawks

The Realities That Hit You Harder Than The Real World Itself

Welcome Back Hawks

Every semester (fall and spring), it's almost like a rite of passage that everyone partakes in what we call 'syllabus week,' aka where you really don't do a whole lot because, this is the week to add or drop classes and get back into the groove of things. However, this week is also the only time where all of the realities of a college student hit at once. Here's why:

1. The Reunion

You see everyone like you haven't seen them in 60 years when in fact it's only been a few weeks.

2. Grocery shopping is a struggle in itself

The hatred for lines and rude people is endless.

3. The alarm that wakes you up just in time for class

We all know this pain.

4. Adding or dropping classes to find the best professor possible

Don't deny it you do it.

5. Skimming the syllabus over like a text message thinking it will be an 'easy class'

LOL.

6. Paying almost as much as a house for your textbooks

Thank you Chegg for your existence.

7. Reminding yourself every single day that you need to get your life together

8. Getting that first 'exclusive' invite to a little social event

Pure glee.

9. Making plans every night of the week

Because, why not be like Paris Hilton in her gory days?

10. Checking your email to an unhealthy degree to see if your professor assigned an actual assignment

Welcome back everyone and have a great semester!

two women enjoying confetti

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.
