It's been a pretty big week. Let's get to it.
Part 1: South Carolina
After going to school here for six months, you’d think that I would understand what’s so great about the Palmetto. I don’t. A palmetto is essentially a tiny palm tree and a palmetto bug looks like a cockroach (#justsayin). Anyway, I digress. Back to politics.
Donald Trumped, again, much to the surprise/dismay/happiness/anger of some voters, with more than a 20 percent lead. Jeb (!!!) dropped out, much to his Super-PAC’s dismay. Almost 100 million dollars down the drain. Marco Rubio and Cruz were within a percent of each other, showing that the viable alternative to Trump is still up in the air. (Hopefully Super Tuesday can clear this issue up).
On the Dems’ side, although Sanders fans had high hopes for SC, Hillary won with a landslide victory, proving that South Carolina’s democrats want liberal change, but aren’t really into that whole “democratic socialism” thing.
Part 2: Nevada
Nevada’s caucus has predicted both parties’ presidential nominees: the last three republicans, and 2000 and 2004 for the democrats (Hillary was nominated in 2008, so she already has a leg up here).
Once again, Donald Trump was chosen by the people of Nevada, but here, Marco Rubio has a still small, but more definite lead over Cruz.
Surprisingly, Hillary only beat out Bernie by a 5-point margin after coming off of her 2012 primary win in Nevada. Looks like some people down in Nevada are feeling the Bern!
It will be interesting to see whether or not Nevada will continue its pattern of choosing nominees.
What to look forward to this week:
SUPER TUESDAY: a day that will make or break many hopefuls’ races, also known as the “SEC of primaries”
There are almost 600 delegates in 12 states up for grabs this Tuesday (in case you are like me and hate math, that’s almost a QUARTER of all delegates. In. One. Day.)
Which states are these? Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Virginia. On a cool note, the American Samoa is also voting on the first as well (yes, that is actually an American territory). It’s going to be a very hard test for Sanders, Cruz, and Rubio. As Shakespeare said, “Beware the Ides of March”.
It’s going to be a good week. No matter what side of the spectrum you’re on, stay informed and #RockTheVote. See y’all next Monday.
