Ba-ding! You reach for your phone to see who has messaged you. A bubble invades your screen with an unfamiliar face inhabiting the circle. To make matters worse, it is a boy you have never talked to in person. Chances are, this guy is trying to make his first move online. Here are seven different guys many girls have met while receiving an unsolicited Facebook encounter.
1. Creepy guy who thinks you're cute
Perhaps creepy guy uses some suggestive language or uses too many winky faces. Either way, the ācomplimentsā given have left you feeling unsettled and very uncomfortable. Time to hit the āblock buttonā and slide out before something dicey happens.
2. Cute guy who thinks you're cute
You have noticed him checking you out around campus and were hoping he would have introduced himself to you by now, but he ruined everything by messaging you instead of talking to you because he was afraid of looking dumb. If only he knew that you were more interested in hearing anything from him and weren't worried about him making a fool of himself. Even if he looked silly, you still would have thought he was cute. Now you can't stop thinking about how awkward your conversation will be after he made his move online. If he ever musters the courage to introduce himself in person, he has a lot to do if he ever wants to see the relationship progress outside the confines of his cell phone.
3. The "hey" guy
What does he want to talk about? The only way to find out is to get baited into an endless conversation that can sometimes seem impossible to end. Hey belongs in the barn. It would be best to leave these messages alone.
4. "Hacked" by his friends guy
If he sent this āaccidentalā message with hopes of a message in return, he is out of luck. He should return to the seventh grade. However, if his friends truly hacked his account, he should seriously consider getting a better phone password.
5. Clever comment guy
Instead of posting his comment in the comment box, this guy sends his thoughts in a Facebook message, hoping it will lead to a future conversation. Rather than using the comment as an attempt to initiate an online conversation, it would be a better opportunity for him to initiate a conversation in person.
6. "Asking for the homeworkā guy
Come on...we all know what he means by "homework," which is why he didn't ask his best friend who sits next to him in class. Proceed with caution here, because if you don't respond, you may look like a jerk. Understand that at any moment, a conversation about history dates could lead to an awkward conversation about taking you on a date.
7. Asking for the homework guy
Not to be confused with "Asking for the homework" guy. We heave a sigh of relief when this conversation ends with āThanks for your help! See you in class!ā Instead of, āSo you doin' anything tonight? Hmu if u wanna study sometime.ā Of all the guys to message you online, this one could actually be worth getting to know.
When it all comes down to it, getting a Facebook message from a guy we have never talked to can be emotionally exhausting. It causes us to panic because we wonder if they will approach us in person or continue to lurk behind their cell phone screen. We also question what they will say if they actually approach us, causing more stress.
To all the guys who choose Facebook messenger as their go-to move to meet a girl, please reconsider your approach. Although meeting girls can be nerve-racking, you must show that you are confident if you want to prove yourself worthy of a relationship by being able to hold a conversation. It is difficult to determine your personality or intentions while staring at the ominous words you typed on a cell phone screen.
Guys, don't worry about looking dumb when talking to girls. Even if you feel awkward, we appreciate your effort to risk personal embarrassment in order to have a face to face conversation. We feel valued when we are talked to instead of typed to. In the end, you will feel valued too.
