Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi come together in celebration of wrapping up the year. It is awesome to be able to have a date party in celebration of the founding of your sorority.
Monmouth is Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi’s annual date party. Both of the sororities were found at Monmouth College in Illinois. Pi Phi was founded in April of 1867 and Kappa was founded as a women’s fraternity in 1870—years before the word “sorority” would even be introduced. Now, the women of Kappa and Pi Phi join together at all universities across the United States to commemorate. There are several different ways celebrated, but at Tech we make it a big deal!
Thursday evening there was a carnival at Kappa’s lodge. There were bouncy houses, lots of food and a whole bunch of fun. Pi Phi and Kappa at Texas Tech also happen to have similar philanthropies. Kappa’s philanthropy is Reading is Fundamental, which is the nation’s largest nonprofit children’s literacy organization. Pi Phi’s philanthropy is Read Lead Achieve, which inspires a lifelong love of reading that can potentially create a more literate society. That being said, to be admitted into the event on Thursday, the member and their date are required to each bring a book, which is then donated to those important philanthropies.
Friday evening was “We Go Together” and was located at Cactus Courtyard in the Depot District. There is a different theme each year, so this year was Grease. Everyone dressed in 50’s clothes; poodle skirts and some couples even went as Sandy and Danny. The pianist from Louie Louie’s Piano Bar was hired to perform. It really put a 50’s spin on all of our favorite songs and personally, I believe it was an awesome idea.
Saturday night was the formal event “Grease Is The Word”. Everyone in attendance was dressed to the nines. I think I can speak for everybody when I say that it was a little confusing being on the bus for, what seemed to be, 30 minutes. However, it was a real treat when we arrived at Caprock Winery. There was yummy hors d’oeuvres being served, alongside some dancing to great songs played by the DJ.
Monmouth is always a fabulous time, but this year seemed to top any date party that I’ve ever been to. The locations and entertainment were amazingly well organized and put together so well. Everyone who went had a blast and the turnout was tremendous. It is great to be able to have a date party in celebration of the founding of your sorority.
