Hi, you. If you're reading this article it means that you too have found yourself wishing you took more time out of your day for yourself. This idea may seem selfish, but one of the most profound lessons I've learned has come from realizing how important self-care is to having a happy and healthy life. Below are some of my personal favorite ways to add a little extra happiness to your everyday life.
1. Blast the Music
There's truly nothing better than putting on your headphones and just getting your groove on. I would be lying if I told you I never spend time alone choreographing ridiculous dances to my favorite songs, or pretending I'm Adele while holding a brush-microphone and gazing at myself in my full-length mirror. Word of advice: don't knock it till you try it. Grab your iPhone and headphones, blast the tunes, and dance like no one's watching.
2. Journal
If you are someone who has trouble imagining the thought of becoming an avid journaler, have no fear. I too used to be a bit daunted by the thought of penning my daily musings; it's actually incredibly therapeutic. Set aside a specific time each day (I used to journal in between my classes!) and you'll be surprised by how quickly you start craving that time where you can just be alone with your thoughts. It's also a great way to track your growth over the years. So grab a pen and dig in-- you won't regret it.
3) Make A Stellar Meal
Sometimes it's easy to fall into the habit of reaching for what's fast and easy (read: Ramen, EasyMac, cereal), but actually taking the time to make a meal for yourself that didn't just come out of a box is both incredibly rewarding and relaxing. You can start by attempting to make one of your favorite "Tasty" videos, or just Google "30 minute dinner recipes." Just setting aside a half hour to prepare something healthy and homemade will leave both your heart and stomach full.
4. Color
What was once reserved for small children who couldn't keep still in a waiting room is now available to the masses! Coloring is having a major moment, and for good reason. Coloring relaxes the brain and relieves anxiety (one reason art therapy is so successful), and you wind up with a piece of art once you're done! Win win.
5. Take A Walk/Run
One of the healthiest ways to relax is going for a walk or run. I used to hate the idea of making my legs move for longer than a five-minute period, but once I started running every day I began craving it! Pissed off? Go for a run. Anxious? Go for a run. Bored? Go for a run. Happy? Go for a run. It's an amazing outlet to have, and you'll be amazed by how much your body will thank you even if you just run once a week or so. The same goes for walks. I love walking around Milwaukee to clear my head, and walking helps keep my stress levels down. Next time you're wondering how to treat yourself, consider running or walking!
