Go turn on the news. Go look at your Facebook and Twitter feeds. Go take a look at newspaper and magazine covers. Everywhere you look is filled with hate these days. Hateful acts against each other. The old saying "an eye for an eye, makes the whole world blind" could not be more true these days. Summer 2016 seems to be filled with horrific acts coming from dark places of hate. When the Orlando attacks shocked the world, Lin Manuel-Miranda said so gracefully, "We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger...Remembrances that hope and love last longer, And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, Cannot be killed or swept aside."
But now a month later, after police shootings and ambushes, the Nice attack, the failed Turkish coup, and many other hateful acts in the world, we all need to find ways to spread a little love to stop the hate. Here are some ways how:
1. Buy a stranger coffee.
2. Call your grandparents and tell them you love them.
3. Take your parents out to dinner.
4. Give your seat to someone else on the bus/subway.
5. Send a "Just Because" card to a friend.
6. Reach out to someone you haven't talked to in a while.
7. Start a Random Act of Kindness chain at a restaurant.
8. Write a thank you note to your favorite professor.
9. Go see a movie with your mom.
10. Volunteer at a local food bank.
11. Clean out your pantry for the local food bank.
12. Find a peaceful protest in your area.
13. Encourage people to vote, to stop the hate.
14. Give the next police officer you see a hug.
15. Or even buy a police officer lunch.
16. Make a care package for troops.
17. Hold a bake sale and donate the money to charity.
18. Adopt a shelter dog.
19. Or volunteer at a dog shelter.
20. See how you can help a local fire station.
21. Help an elderly neighbor with yard work.
22. Donate old books to a local library.
23. Donate your unwanted clothes and home goods to the Salvation Army to help victims of the West Virginia floods or wildfires out west.
24. Donate blood.
25. Or volunteer with the Red Cross if you're scared of needles.
26. Don't start political fights on Facebook.
27. Donate to a random go fund me page.
28. Donate to Penn State's Dance Marathon (shameless plug).
29. Send a surprise care package to a friend to brighten their day.
30. Hold the door open for a new mom or elderly couple.
31. Compliment random people you run into, it might be the best part of their day.
32. End every phone call with "I love you."
