We all have difficulty in keeping to our new year's resolutions, but each year thousands of new gym memberships are made and thousands of new diets are started. I think each year we believe that we will do better than the year before but many of those goals and plans we set can fall through with just one bad day or slip-up; especially if it is the first day of the new year. Here are examples of a couple of ways that first day could have gone very wrong.
If you're anything like the majority of young adults in the U.S. then you most likely started the new year pretty hungover. You of course wanted to end 2015 with a bang but forgot to consider what the morning after would be like. This unfortunately created a domino effect for the entirety of the day that effectively ruined each one of your new year's resolutions.
Just earlier that week you had been inspired by an online blog post of someone's resolution last year to work out every morning and the impressive results. You vowed that starting January 1st you would begin attending your local gym every morning until it became second nature. But now those plans definitely fell through, and you decide instead to spend the day sleeping-in.
Seeing that your resolution to work out would have to wait a couple of days at least, you decide to go ahead and push that new diet off too and eat something hot and greasy to get rid of that headache.
Now it's the middle of the day, you have no plans since you told your friends that you would probably be recovering from your first work out at this point, and you decide to turn on the TV. Since you're at home and eating your favorite comfort foods it's only appropriate for you to finally start that new show you've been meaning to watch, even though you vowed you were going to cut your amount of binge-watching in half this year.
After about four, five maybe seven hours of watching that new show, you realize it's dark outside and the entire first day of the new year has gone past without you even noticing. You decide it would be best to go to sleep early and try again tomorrow, but you quickly realize how very awake you are as you have spent all day lying around, doing nothing.
Unfortunately, it takes the rest of the weekend for you to get your sleep schedule back to normal, and come Monday you already have to go back to work, without ever starting your new lifestyle.
It might take some time, but eventually you'll get started on your resolutions or just on the ones that really matter. Even if you never do get back on track it's OK, as you're not alone! Most resolutions fail every year and only a small percent make it through with success. If you really want to make small changes and improvements in your life don't limit yourself to the beginning of a new year! Remember you can start whenever, as long as you work hard and have a lil' faith.
