If you are like me and am always in search for something new to watch, read or listen to, here are a few of my new favorite sources of entertainment that will get you thinking about modern day issues and the role you play in the larger scheme.
1. "Formation" — Beyoncé
"You that bitch when you cause all this conversation". She knows it. You know it. We all know it. Beyoncé is Queen, and the surprise release of her new single "Formation" has breathed new life into the world of music. With fierce choreography, a cameo from her daughter Blue, and images lending support to the Black Lives Matter movement, this video and new song are both fun and empowering.
2. "Chelsea Does..."
In the past, I have had a hard time completely loving Chelsea Handler. While she can be abrasive at times, she nailed it with the release of her Netflix docu-series "Chelsea Does." Throughout four, hour-long episodes she discusses marriage, silicon valley, racism, and drugs. Her biting commentary and infusion of personal experiences, work together to provide a super funny look into modern day issues.
3. "Master of None"
"Master of None" is amazing, and that's all you need to know. With an incredibly diverse cast and witty comedy, the show subtly explores issues of dating in the 21st century, representation and diversity in the Media and so much more. I binge-watched the entire first season in a matter of days, and I highly recommend you do the same. Aziz Ansari kills it, so if you are a "Parks and Recreation" fan, or simply enjoy laughter and general happiness in life you need to watch this show.
4. "Another Round" Podcast
Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton: learn these names, know these women, I can assure you that you will be all the better for it. As the co-hosts of Buzzfeed's "Another Round" podcast, these ladies have been my constant companions, since I was first introduced to them only a week ago. I have binge-listened to them while getting ready in the morning, walking to class, and driving to work. Absorbing their hysterical yet critical commentary on politics, gender, race and racism in America has been enriching to say the least. The show often features great guest speakers. My personal favorite so far being Episode Eight with Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah. I urge you to check it out, be enlightened, fall in love. You can find them here or download their podcasts free from iTunes.
5. Womankind Magazine
I was on my weekly browse of Barnes & Noble looking through the "Women's Interests" magazine section when alongside the glossy figures of airbrushed bodies, I spotted the beautiful work of art which has now become one of my favorite reads. "Womankind Magazine" is truly a unique experience for the reader. It is aesthetically pleasing not only in its art features and design but also its lack of advertisements. Covering important issues in creative and engaging ways specific to the woman's experience, this magazine is definitely worth a subscription to.
