I Wasn't The 'Hot Friend' But I Didn't Need To Be To Find My Future Husband

It's all about who you look for in a crowded room.

I Wasn't The 'Hot Friend' But I Didn't Need To Be To Find My Future Husband
Emily Richeson

You walk into any room and it's like every set of eyeballs is attached to her. The eyeballs of jealous girls because they know she's flawless, the eyeballs of guys because she's the girl of their dreams and the eyes of your own because, more times than not, you wish that was you. Yep, she's "the hot friend"... and you're just her friend.

You could go to the mall and inspect every article of clothing in every store and choose the perfect outfit for the night. No matter what that outfit is, she will show up looking better, even if she threw that outfit together in five minutes. When she complains about her hair being a mess, you wish yours looked like that any day of the week. She hardly goes to the gym, but she looks like she pays rent there as if she lives there. You, however, feel like a bag of trick or treat candy next to her.

See, the frustrating thing is that she is the sweetest person. She isn't rude or coincided, and honestly, she doesn't even think she looks pretty even when she's stunning to everyone else. She is such a great friend but you always get intimidated that no guy will ever notice you because their dream girl is right there. The reason I know all this is because one of my closest friends is the hot friend, I was just her friend.

I wish I had a dollar for every time a person, guy or girl, sent me my Snapchat story through message and had all the heart eye emojis asking who she was and how they need to meet her. Or how about a number of guys that would say, "Hey, so you should bring your friend Jane (replacing her name) and y'all come out tonight," as if to add me to the invite for her.

The list goes on and on.

She never paid attention to guys, which was crazy because they were all focused on her. She never made me feel excluded or like one of the 6 Chicks and she was TomTom (13 Going On 30 For those who are lost). We would go out and have a blast every single time. She would dance with me, we would sing at the top of our lungs, and we could have fun doing just about anything! She entails the amazing friend we all want.

One night, I told myself: wear what YOU want to wear, do your hair how YOU like it and have as much fun as YOU want to without worrying about anyone. That night was one of the most fun nights of my life. That night is the night I won over the heart of my now husband, and she was standing right there the entire time.

A very close family friend always told me, "The man who's meant for you will have eyes for only you, no matter who is in the room."

That night she and I and a few others were out dancing and singing along to some terrible cover band. I look over and we've managed to dance our way beside the cutest guy with the most handsome brown eyes! He was looking right at me.

He danced with me.

He promised to call me.

He did call.

He took me on dates.

He asked me to be his girlfriend.

He proposed to me.

He married me.

I'm not saying all this as an "I finally beat her at being hot, she lost" because that's not true at all. She's in a relationship and has been for awhile.

But the night I made myself see that I am beautiful in my own eyes, someone else who means the world to me now, thought the exact same thing.

She is still one of my best friends and she's still one of the prettiest girls I know. Though all that is true and though I was never the "hot friend," I'm now the hot wife in my husband's eyes and I could never want to be anything else.

Always, always know that we all have wonderful features and assets. We all are made for someone, and when we love our inner and outer selves, that someone just may come along and sweep you up, no matter who is standing beside you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
