"I feel like I was born to have babies and play volleyball." This is part of what Beach Volleyball Olympian Kerri-Walsh Jennings said in an interview about her being a mother of three as well as an Olympic athlete. So, nothing wrong with that right? As women, most of us are called to be mothers or mother figures, but as we live in a "do everything for yourself and no one else" type of world, Walsh-Jennings received some serious backlash for simply stating what most women end up doing with their lives; raising a family.
My question is: how is it that the media has a problem with a gold medal Olympian talking about her intense love for her children as well as the motivation they provide for her in the game yet they applaud people like Kim Kardashian or Kanye West for taking time "off" to care for their baby. It sounds as if there is a double standard to me.
On Twitter there were mixed reactions of Walsh-Jennings' comment, but I think she was right on point with what she had said. In fact, Walsh Jennings made a point to all that traditional families still exist, and that a woman can be a champion while also being a mom. In an interview she said she was tired of playing in a very self-focused and self-centered sport, she was seeking balance in her life, and having children provided her a way to be giving while also continuing to excel in the sport that she loved. What an inspiration to women all over, that *gasp* a way to find fulfillment is to have kids, who would've thought that?! Certainly not a champion? It was probably some misogynist who doesn't want women to succeed in life but rather go make a sandwich for an eagerly waiting man. That my friends is where you are wrong.
Now time for the media's double standard: Kanye and Kim are constantly in the spotlight, for whatever they're doing so when they are seen being parents to children North and Saint, they must be seen as relateable for once in their life and therefore applauded for it? Because that makes sense...
Flip to Kerri Walsh-Jennings: Stanford Graduate with a degree in American Studies who has been playing Beach Volleyball for years turned Olympic Athlete. All but one of those realities seem attainable for the average person, graduating College and playing in the NCAA. The only difference is that she is a three-time Olympic gold medalist. And because she's closer to being relatable to average women, she should be a part of that stereotype that women shouldn't have kids and focus on living their lives with their husband? Right? If that's the case it is a sad world we are living in. I am proud to say that I was born to make babies. Take it or Leave it.
