I Told My Friends I Was Voting Third Party And Here is What Happened

Who I voted for does not define me as a person.

Now that the most controversial election has come to an end, people are still spewing out their opinions. As a new voter with not much interest in politics, I felt like an outsider looking in. While doing this, I noticed how the candidates are not the problem, but that us Americans are.

People are tearing each other apart based one one check mark they put down on one piece of paper. No matter who I voted for, it does not define me as a person. It may speak for parts of what I believe in, but your opinion should not change of me just because I did not vote the same as you. We need to stop spreading hate and start respecting differences.

Personally, I could not deal with the constant bickering of Trump vs Clinton and because of this, I decided to tell my friends I was voting the third party. To my great surprise, this caused more chaos. My views still were not respected because third party voting still does not meet people’s standard of “normal.”

You are wasting your vote.

Please explain to me how voting for who I believe in is wasting a vote. No person can tell another that their opinion is wrong. Your own personal view obtains to you and does not have to please everyone else.

Might as well just not vote.

Yes, I might as well still vote because my voice deserves to be heard. Our ancestors fought long and hard for the right to vote. Especially, women's right to vote which was not really even too long ago. Therefore, I am going to exercise my right as an American citizen.

If you are not voting for Trump you are voting wrong.

I do not know how many different times I will have to say this, but my opinion is still valid just because you do not agree with it. I can see though that your arrogance matches Trump’s very well.

You should be voting for Clinton to show you support women.

It would be a historic moment to see the first woman President be in office, but that does not mean all women should have voted for her. I support women and cannot wait for the first woman President, but that does not mean I had to vote for her. One thing does not match up to the other.

People are always going to have something to say about what you do, so just stay true to who you are and follow what you believe in.

Who I actually voted for you ask? That is something only I will ever know.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
