I Voted For Trump, But I Am Not A Racist

Instead of name-calling, let's try praying.

I am a millennial from New York that voted for Donald Trump, but that does not make me a bad person. Not only does it not make me a bad person, but it also does not make me a racist, a bigot, and a bully. I have been called ignorant, intolerant and even had people say I was not a Christian because of the candidate that I voted for. Let me explain something to all of those who have expressed a hate for Trump supporters: my vote for Trump does not mean I am any of those things.

One thing that needs to be understood is that what Donald Trump says does not make him a bad politician. To clarify, I am not justifying the things that he has said, just explaining that saying mean and hurtful things does not mean that his politics are bad. I do not agree with his racist remarks and what sense of xenophobia that he has. Trump has also made mistakes in his past that would make him seem like a poor candidate, and I agree with that. The problem is, while you can't base your opinion of Trump on his past, do not ignore Benghazi or Hillary threatening national security through private email servers. Neither candidate was qualified based solely on their past decisions.

The reason I voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton was because I agree with more of his political choices than Hillary Clinton’s, and I believe he will accomplish more than she would have. Let's ignore his rude comments and instead focus on what his positions are; he wants to get rid of illegal immigrants and - more or less - get rid of Muslims. Because of this, many call him a xenophobic, and that is most likely true. I feel as though this is actually not a bad idea in moderation for the time period that we are in, along with his other plans. The "Founding Fathers" created a system of checks and balances to keep the president in line. I have faith in this system to work. Trump's plans are extreme and over the top. Once reigned in by Congress and the Supreme Court, I believe Trump's xenophobic nature will be good because instead of focusing on the world's issues, let's focus on America. I think we should stay out of the world’s issues and fix the problems in our own country first.

I agree with Trump's abortion stance (pro-life), and his stances on gun control and taxes. I even agree with much of his foreign policy of destroying terrorist organizations and ending the Iran nuclear deal. Clinton takes a much different stance on all of these issues that I do not agree with. I did not vote for Trump because I agree with everything, but because I agree with more of his policies than of Clinton's.

I believe Trump was the better candidate and will be a better president than Clinton would have been. So, next time you want to call someone a racist or ignorant for voting for Trump, stop for a second and think. What are their motives? I know Donald Trump is not a perfect candidate. There have been many protests because of this; some have been peaceful, and some have not. However, instead of protesting, try praying. I pray that God will give Trump wisdom when he is in office and that when Trump is in charge, he does good for this country and not harm. I pray that Trump would recognize the fact that banning Muslims and building a wall may not be the best solution. Try praying for him instead of protesting him, and trying loving the hateful instead of being hateful yourself. We fix things by being understand and patient, not by calling each other names.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
