A Void Resurfaced By The Holidays

Do you know what it feels like to spend Christmas thousands of miles away from your family?

Family. People often associate the holidays, especially Christmas, with family. The two almost become synonymous around this time.

My family tradition as a child was for my dad's side to gather at my grandmas house and have a big celebration. For many years I took this for granted; having all my family in the same place, at the same time overwhelmed me. I remember being more excited to go home than I was to open presents. All the noise, the enthusiasm, the playfulness, none of it appealed to me at the time.

For the last nine Christmases I have been nearly 7,500 miles away from my family and there is nothing I miss more than being overwhelmed. As I have gotten older, and as I have lost the privilege to spend time with my family, I have realized that that overwhelming feeling I once felt was love. I was overwhelmed by the plethora of love that surrounded me.

People often complain about the cons of being with family during the holidays-- the unwanted questions, the judgement, seeing the cousin you find disagreeable, dealing with a crazy aunt, and so on. I envy those people because all those cons are outweighed by the pros of spending the holidays with your loved ones. I miss everything about it, even the things that once made me want to escape. You do not acknowledge how wonderful it is until you are no longer a part of it.

Despite the fact that my relatives are a 10 hour plane ride away, my immediate family is here and I have been fortunate enough to spend the last nine christmas' with them. The magic of the holidays lives on because I am still surrounded by the love of family. I do wish I could be with my entire family, but accept that it is not possible for now. I compensate for their absence by calling them, and we somehow manage to celebrate together through a phone call. All the unwanted questions get asked, I get judged for my life choices, I have a conversation with my cousin whom I find unpleasant, I laugh with my crazy aunt, and so on. With all that, I get the warm feeling that being overwhelmed by love gives you.

Christmas, or any holiday, will never be the same as they once were and I am okay with that. I envy those who have all their relatives around, but I am fortunate to have even the smallest ounce of family to celebrate with. My extended family may be all the way across the world, but their love matriculates into the family that I am with.

Christmas time is family time. Recognize, however, that family is anyone you love with the uttermost sincerity, even a pet. Appreciate those surrounding you, long for those at a distance, and never take any of them for granted because, who knows, someday you might move across the world and have to spend Christmas without them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
