It may sound silly, but "SpongeBob" has taught me a lot throughout the years. There are many lessons that can be found in the show, from how to be a good friend, to the importance of working hard and staying positive. However, there is one lesson that I cannot help but reflect on as midterms come to a close.
Procrastination. And why it is important not to do it.
You know that episode of "SpongeBob" where he is supposed to write an essay on “what not to do at stoplight” and then proceeds to do everything but write his essay?
And then it is just a giant coincidence that everything he does while he is procrastinating, are things you should not do at a stoplight either.
If you have no idea what I am talking about, you should watch the episode.
Anyways, that episode has basically been my week. Every time I would sit down to do something, I got distracted or remembered I had to do something else that I thought was the new top priority.
After two and half years of college you would think by now I would know the proper way to balance out my school work and studying. But here is a little secret: anything can happen.
Sometimes things get assigned last minute or your professors somehow manage to pile everything on you at the same time, which is why you should do your best not to procrastinate.
Instead of jumping from topic to topic, try to stay focused on one thing. Once you finish that thing move on to the next. And do not forget to take breaks.
Part of SpongeBob’s problem, and mine, was that he kept thinking of things that he thought he needed to do. When in reality the one thing he actually needed to do, his essay, was the thing he was putting off the most.
So, the moral of the story is while procrastination may seem like a good idea at the time, you will pay for it later. Instead of binge watching “The Office” or the “Bachelor,” write your paper or study for that exam. Because otherwise you might end up being up until 2 a.m. on the verge of a mental breakdown.
