I personally feel like Valentine's Day is grossly misunderstood holiday. Every year, some people tend to take it as a day reserved for lovers and everyone else who doesn't have a significant other is deemed totally worthless and banished to spend the day eating chocolate alone and crying. Others have critiqued it a holiday designed by greeting card companies and if you really love someone you should treat every day like Valentine's Day. However, I tend to feel the opposite way about it.
First of all, this holiday is probably designed by the greeting card companies, but it's a cute idea to have a day dedicated to someone you love. And here's the major kicker behind it, someone you love doesn't have to be your significant other. I know some of you are thinking "Well, Gab you have a boyfriend so you don't know what it's like," and maybe those people are right -- but I really feel like this holiday is just about love, whether it be platonic or romantic. If you're single, don't dedicate the day to feeling bad about yourself, think about all the people who you love and who love you and spend it with them. Spend Valentine's Day with your best friend getting a fancy dinner and having a girl's night. Send flowers to your Mom or even your Dad. Kiss your pet and tell them how much you love them, even though they have no perception of holidays, they'll still be excited to get a smooch from you. It's a cute little holiday and you can still do cute things with whoever you love. Also, I think it's important to keep in mind that being single gets a really bad reputation. Not everyone who's single is lonely and if I'm being blunt here, having a significant other just for the sake of it is not a good idea in the slightest. Relationships require a lot of work and effort, it's not all cute Instagram pictures all the time -- and if you're not ready to put the work in behind it, don't do it. I think too many people feel defined by their relationship status, and it really shouldn't be that way. No one should make you feel like you're "wrong" for being single.
Overall, Valentine's Day is just misunderstood. It's supposed to be about celebrating all kinds of love and all the people we love in our lives, and taking a day to recognize it. If you are in relationship, fantastic -- I hope you have a wonderful day. If you're single, I hope you have a wonderful day as well and I hope you spend it with someone you love, whoever it may be.
