Valentine's Day has always been puzzling to me. I acknowledge that for a lot of people it serves as a special day to have a nicer-than-normal date night, an opportunity to buy flowers, and whatever else people feel they need to do to express their love. But why should we save doing these special things for just one day of the year? Is there a law saying "you can't buy chocolate for your significant other unless it's on Valentine's Day,"? The idea of the day is touching; love is great! But the execution of it is where I shake my head.
I think everyday is an opportunity to show someone you truly care about that you really love them. Leave a note on the table for your significant other, pick up a candy bar for your crush; showing someone you love them doesn't have to be buying them a $35 box of chocolates! If you have those feelings for someone, stop making excuses and show them how you feel!
*Disclaimer* I am not encouraging you to profess your undying love for someone at an inopportune time and place, but I am encouraging you to put on your big-kid pants and start a real conversation with someone.
We have all gotten caught up in trying to express love through materialistic and overly-showy, almost "production-like" gestures. Have a face-to-face conversation, offer to take them out to coffee, or even just compliment their outfit. Don't overthink this y'all, aren't the best relationships with people the ones we least expect? So on this Valentine's Day do not be discouraged if you don't have a Valentine to celebrate with. Be hopeful, because there is someone out there you just haven't met yet. Or be proactive and talk to the person you sit by in chemistry lab... It's up to you!
