Everyone thinks that Valentine’s Day has to be this huge holiday, with big gestures and spending a lot of money. But what if you can’t do that? There’s many ways you can enjoy Valentine’s Day and have your wallet enjoy it too. In college, you have many long distance relationships, so I’ll touch on what you can do in that situation too. You don’t need to create a grand gesture to show your significant other that you care about them. It’s known that college students are usually tight on money and sometimes these action are too difficult.
Make Dinner
In order to get a reservation for Valentine’s Day dinner at a good restaurant, you usually have to make it in April of the previous year. These nights out can also be very pricey and can become stressful if the restaurant is busy.
Solution: Make dinner. It doesn’t have to be something expensive. Your Valentine and you can bond over making dinner for each other. Go to the store together too. You can budget how much you want to spend and you can control what you eat (good for those with food allergies or the picky eater). Make the table look nice and have an uninterrupted, stress free night with your Valentine.
A Letter
Gifts can be difficult to come by. Sometimes it is difficult to decide on a gift, especially if a birthday has just come up, or if you have been partners for a long time. A hand written letter is good for both genders. Tell the other person how you feel, you can make it as simple or complex as you’d like. I’m sure your Valentine will love it. It’s a gift that shows care, love, and effort, but still allows for your wallet to smile.
A phone call or video chat
You may not get to be with your person on Valentine’s Day. This is not an uncommon situation. Make time in the day to call or video chat your Valentine. It may seem like a small gesture, but it can feel like a grand one if one, or both, of you are very busy.
One up: Have a dinner date over video chat
How you may ask? Plan to have dinner together at the same time you are going to video chat your Valentine. You don’t have to eat the same thing. It may seem odd at first, but it’s a small thing you can do. Note: Do not wear headphones during this chat if you do not like the sound of someone eating.
Movie Marathon
Many people have a Netflix account or go to Red Box. You can have a movie marathon on Valentine’s Day. Make sure that you choose movies that you both will enjoy. Make it interesting and have a theme to your movie choice. Take turns choosing the movie. It’s simple, easy, and you can both enjoy a quiet evening in. Note: This can also be done over video chat if you time the playing of the movies right.
Valentine’s Day isn’t all about the flowers, chocolates, and money spent. It’s about showing your person that you truly care about them. The main thing they look for: effort. So this Valentine’s Day, shake it up, do something simple and easy. You don’t need to bust the bank, to make the other person happy.
