It's your senior year of high school. Summer is coming around, and all you can think is, "Just two more months, and I'll be out of this town." You are so excited to start a new chapter of your life at the college you visited and thought was the best pick for you.
Move-in day rolls around, and the excitement is too much. You are finally going to college. Everyone says they're the "best four years of your life," so they must be, right? Right?
Well I agree with this statement, but the four years might not all happen at the same place.
Maybe it's within the first day, the first week or first month. Maybe it's not until later on in the year when you decide that this is not the right school for you.
Maybe it's because of financial situations. Maybe you really don't like being across the country from your family and friends like you thought you would. Maybe you realize college isn't really for you after all.
Whatever the case may be, I am here to tell you questioning student — transfer.
I know it sounds scary, and it will be at first, but you will be so much happier.
When I first started out at my first university, I was so excited. I joined various clubs, and I made a lot of great friends, but deep down I just knew I wasn't happy.
I wrestled with this thought of happiness for the majority of my freshman year. Should I transfer? Would I really be happier at a different university? Should I give it more time? Is it worth the hassle?
While these are all valid questions, the most important question is will it make you happy?
No one ever thinks their senior year while visiting colleges, "Oh yeah I could see myself transferring from this school if I come here." You fall madly in love with your university, and that's why breaking up can be a hard thing to do.
When I picked my current university, I picked it mostly for the price. Now after being here for almost a year, I know I could not have picked a better place to call my second home.
When I came to school here, I didn't know anyone, which, honestly, isn't as scary as it sounds. I rushed a sorority, made a ton of friends through that and that has opened the door to so many other opportunities and experiences I am so thankful for.
Recently I went back to my old school to visit some friends. Even though I did have a really good time, being there reassured my decision to transfer and how much happier I am now than I was just a year ago.
You tell me which is more scary — transferring, or not being at the university where you will have "the best four years of your life."
