On November 27th, wife, mother, and entrepreneur Ivanka Trump posted a sweet tweet for her son, Theodore.
Immediately, Twitter users flocked to the social media platform to mock President-elect Trump’s daughter.
Come on, guys. Really?
Birth • day (noun): the day of a person’s birth; the anniversary of something starting or being founded.
By mere definition, Ivanka used the phrase “happy birthday” correctly. She was celebrating the anniversary of something starting -- the life of her son and the beginning of her time as a mother. I did the same thing Ivanka did. I did it every month for my daughter and my son until they turned one. And I often used the phrase “happy birthday”.
The fact that so many people have chosen to mock Ivanka for her word choice bothers me because I think these responses are rooted beyond her tweets. I think people saw her tweet as an opportunity to further mock the Trump name.
Let me preface this by saying this: Donald Trump has said some of the most despicable things I have ever heard, and he has threatened the lives and the safety of many. I do not support Trump’s policies, and I did not vote for him. However, the fact that people feel the need to criticize every minute thing the Trump family says, does, or posts is not going to change the fact that he and his family are going to be at the head of our country. And honestly, do we really think that tweeting about Ivanka’s decision is going to affect her? She is a successful woman. A wife, a mother, and an entrepreneur. Her father is going to be the next President of the United States; does she have time to care about what simple tweeters have to say about her decision to wish her eight-month-old son happy birthday?
I really think we need to get our priorities straight. We need to, dare I say, learn what is important and what is not. Yes, Ivanka Trump is Donald Trump’s daughter, but belittling her personal choices isn’t something we need to be worrying about. We need to think about the natural disasters that are striking the country, and we need to think about the lives that are being lost by acts of terrorism and other tragic events (I’m thinking the shooting at Ohio State University and other such incidents). Please guys. Think about what’s important in the world. Think about the things that we can stand for, what we can work to change and how we can work to help others.
