Unpacking For The Summer

The joys of moving back home, and the horrors of unpacking everything

Unpacking For The Summer

Everyone in college who goes home for the summer knows the cycle. We are so excited to go back home and see our family and our hometown friends. We can't wait to see our dogs and cats again! We are overjoyed that we won't have to take another final for months. All we can see is blue skies and the ocean breeze in our near future. But there's always that one horror: unpacking everything you brought with you to college. Here is a list of what all of us who go home for the summer can relate to when it comes to the idea of unpacking.

1. Packing up your dorm room.

OMG, when did I get so much stuff? I will not do this again, next year.

2. Home at last!

We made it! Nothing fell off the car, and we didn't have a wreck because we couldn't see out of the rear-view mirror! Perfect. Now, that I'm all comfy and settled in at home and not to mention exhausted from packing and cleaning, looks like I need to unpack everything. Can't leave the fish in the car.

3. Time to relax?

My family helped me unpack everything from the car--sweet! Now, time to chill. I've had a busy day. My stuff takes over the kitchen, but it's cool, right? I'll move it out by morning, promise.

4. Catching up.

Well, I need to see all my hometown friends! I haven't seen them in forever. And I'm really missing my boyfriend and my college friends. Need to see them ASAP.

5. Free time.

Wow! Look at all this free time I have! Summer is awesome. Guess I should get to unpacking. It's been about a week.

6. Bargaining.

But, hey, I need a job before I go back to school to make some money. How about I just unpack when I get off work? But I want to make time for my family. I'll make time to unpack too. I don't want to live out of these boxes anymore.

7. Reassurance.

Well, looks like my clothes are all in my drawers. I've worn all of them by now. Go me. Progress. I'll finish the rest later. I've got a month till I go back.

8. Seven days until move-in.

Lucky me, everything is still packed except for my clothes! But wait -- what if I don't want to bring all of this? I've got to redecorate my dorm room! It can't look the same every year. Well, I guess it's time to unpack and repack again.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
