Let's all say it together: "College is really hard." We all say it. Some of us say it daily. So now that we all admit let's help each other out! There are so many little ways to help your peers as you go about your day and I hope you will try to integrate them into your everyday life.
The first is so simple: smile! I know I have resting mad face and when I see other people who look really down I smile at them and almost they smile back. It's a simple twitch of your mouth, but that way whoever you passed had to at least have smiled for a second.
The second is to help people if they drop something or have their hands full. Tripping up the stairs and dropping your phone, laptop, and notebooks can be tragic for the day. Let's also be honest we all drop doors on ourselves, especially the HSS doors. So when you notice someone struggling in similar ways we all do it is a great moment to do your good deed for the day and pick up a notebook or hold the door. Just remember, even if you are in a hurry, your day would be better if someone helped you so pass it on to another Vol.
A third is to always stop and pray for your friends when someone asks. We need prayers. If you are not really sure where you stand in your faith you can still pray or ask for prayers. If you have someone ask you to pray for them, stop what you are doing, just for 20 or 30 seconds, and give them the prayer they are relying on. It can be a huge comfort to someone having a bad day or week to know they have someone thinking about them and caring about them.
These are three little things that you can do as a Volunteer to help your peer throughout their day and it will make you feel good to know you were able to help.
Never forget, one that bears a torch shadows oneself to give light to others.
