The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation honors the life and the legacy of Andrew McDonough, a 14-year-old dedicated athlete, and student from Wilmington, Delaware. In January 2007, Andrew went into cardiac arrest and was diagnosed with AML Leukemia.
The doctors did not think that Andrew would live through the night, but much to their surprise, he fought the battle with Leukemia for 167 days before passing away on July 14, 2007. Andrew's B+ blood type was so fitting with the way Andrew lived his life and inspired others that it became not only the name of this wonderful organization, but it also became his family and friend's motto during his fight with childhood cancer -- to "Be Positive."
The B+ Foundation's mission states:
"In addition to furthering the "B+" (Be Positive) legacy of the Foundation's 14 year old namesake, The B+ Foundation provides financial support to families of children nationwide while also providing grants for cutting-edge childhood cancer research. Finally, The B+ Foundation is engaged in advocacy efforts to increase awareness and funding in the battle against childhood cancers."
On Tuesday, November 17, The B+ Foundation will be coming to the University of Alabama. All four of the University's Greek governing councils: Panhellenic, IFC, NPHC, and UGC, are hosting a Spin-A-Thon to raise money for this life-changing organization.
The Spin-A-Thon will take place at the Presidential Village Rec Center from 12-6 p.m. The object of the event is for each participating organization to keep their bike wheels spinning for the duration of the event.
Childhood Cancer is the number one disease killer of children and teenagers, more than any other disease. To put things into perspective, every school day 46 kids are told they have cancer.
The University of Alabama's Greek community is excited to work together to beat the fundraising goal, to beat childhood cancer and to inspire others to live like Andrew.
