The United States Is A Dangerous Place To Be

Why stricter gun laws will not solve the problem.

The United States Is A Dangerous Place To Be

The United States is in complete despair over the latest shooting in Orlando, Florida, at Pulse nightclub. 49 are dead after a gunman went into the nightclub on a rampage, making it the largest mass shooting in modern United States history. Families and friends, as well as the rest of America, are devastated over the news of 49 innocent people being senselessly killed.

Unfortunately, mass shootings have become the norm, with over 200 in the last decade. The victims seem to increase each time and they have all been at random times and places. The shooters' main goals are to kill as many as possible for whatever reason they have in mind. Each time this tragedy occurs, there is the same mourning period for the lives lost as well as the repetition of the argument over gun control.

According to Merriam Webster, "gun control" consists of laws that control how guns are sold, how they are used, and who can own them. Gun control has become a national controversy between the citizens and the government.

There are over 55,000 licensed gun dealers in the United States, including gun shops and bigger suppliers such as WalMart. Licensed gun dealers are required to run background checks on the purchasers of firearms. However, those who are not licensed are not required to run a background check, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

In addition to purchasing a gun from a shop, we can also get our hands on firearms from friends and "background check free" gun shows.

Of course, if you do run into a licensed gun seller who requires a background check and your past isn’t “clean,” you can be turned down. That’s when we run into our tunneled vision towards the real problem.

The man responsible for killing 49 people at Pulse nightclub had no criminal background and was able to buy a semi-automatic rifle, a very powerful firearm.

Yes, stricter gun laws will make it harder for criminals and those without a criminal background to get their hands on a firearm. By having laws in place, this may have never happened. However, what it won’t do is stop criminals from getting guns. We need to step back and take a look at the real issue here. Criminals are criminals. Not a whole lot will stop them from accomplishing what they want to get done.

America’s question is why is it too easy to buy a gun? First, it's because stricter gun laws have not been put in place. Second, it's because we, as Americans, have the right to own and carry weapons.

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine High School shooters, bought their guns from a friend who they knew who worked at a pizza shop. He sold the guns to them for only $500. Adam Lanza, the shooter responsible for Sandy Hook, had access to the firearms from his mother. She owned and purchased the guns legally.

I don’t see the second amendment changing soon. Americans will always be able to carry and own firearms. I want these tragedies to end as much as the next person, but the world that we live in is ugly and filled with so much hate. The horrible truth behind these tragedies is that these murderers have the goal in mind to massacre large crowds of people. We can make it harder for them to buy firearms, but we can’t change the horrible nature of people.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
