It’s kind of hard to imagine that there are some great original restaurants in the same town as Archer Road, chain restaurant heaven. And it’s so easy to make a stop at McDonald’s or Subway or Chipotle because they’re proven brands that you know are tasty. However, doing a little exploring on your own can be a pretty rewarding experience. Some of Gainesville’s finest are also sort of rare around the country.
Willy’s Mexicana Grill – although Willy’s has several locations, all of them are in Georgia…except our very own. Located on SW Archer Road, Willy’s is like a Chipotle in its set-up but completely unique in its offerings. Unlike Chipotle, there are several menu items to choose from besides burritos or bowls. And unlike wide-variety outlets like Moe’s, the food lacks that Americanized, processed feel. It also packs quite a kick with spicy salsa and seasoning, something that’s missing in a lot of Mexican restaurant chains. The chips are also always fresh and salted just the right amount. As a bonus, the Gainesville location offers a Freestyle Coke Machine, which is always a plus.
How Do You Roll – sushi is getting to be hugely popular, which means sushi places are a dime a dozen now, especially here in Gainesville. How Do You Roll is a bit different, though, and has very few nationwide locations. Located at Stadium Club on W. University Ave., How Do You Roll differentiates itself from the competition by offering the option to design your own roll. There are a ton of meats, veggies, and other fillings to choose from, meaning you can go hundreds of times and never get the same exact food twice. Even better, the food is high quality and cheap, as well as quick. When you have the Bento menu memorized, How Do You Roll is a great change of pace and taste.
Reggae Shack – it seems that while many people have heard of Reggae Shack, few have ever actually been inside. However, it’s definitely worth looking into. Located on W University Ave., Reggae Shack serves authentic Caribbean (specifically Jamaican) cuisine that packs a punch. While the food is spicy, it’s also delicious and its ethnic authenticity really separates it from the run-of-the-mill food most people are so used to by now. While grilled chicken and seafood aren’t completely foreign, the blend of spices and sauces make for unique flavors, giving the food a perfect mix of familiarity and uniqueness. Also, for being so focused on prime seafood, it’s a great price. Reggae Shack is that rare experience that lives up to its hype.
While what you’re familiar with may be quick, it’s absolutely worth your time and distance away from your comfort zone to check out some of Gainesville’s more interesting offerings. They have yet to disappoint!
