When I first heard that Union Colony Preparatory School's high school principal was put on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, I was interested but not surprised. As a former Union Colony student, I went through four years under this man. I knew the stereotypes and rumors that had been thrown around for years -- from something as big as taking money from the soccer team for the boys' basketball team to something as small as allowing his players to have their phones, and a variety of other things in the middle.
I reached out to some current students to try and see if I could find out what was going on. The answer came as no shock. He has reportedly been trying to change basketball players' grades so that they could continue playing.*
Anybody who has been through Union Colony's system under Lance Mosness knows that he holds a special place in his heart for basketball. The way to get away with things at that school? Be affiliated with the basketball team. For the first two years of my high school experience, I was berated about the smallest of things, while I watched basketball players get away with breaking dress code, having their phones out, and being late. When I finally joined as a manager, these rules basically vanished for me too.
However, grades have always been a pedestal that Union Colony has stood on. It was a tough school and the teachers at UC are there to teach. Academics always came before sports or other extracurriculars.
It saddens and disappoints me that someone of this position would potentially tarnish Union Colony's reputation for selfish reasons. It makes me wonder what other corrupt actions this administrator has done or covered up previously.
*The reasons that he is under investigation have not officially been released. This article is based on student reports from those who were closely involved with the team.
