Unfortunate Regrets Of Winter Break

What I wish I did instead of sleeping.

For almost a month, we students have enjoyed a (hopefully) calm, restful and surprisingly warm winter break. We have had time to eat too much during the holidays, celebrate New Years with friends and family and, of course, watch The Tide crush Michigan State and head to the National Championship. But just as resolutions are being made for this new year, there are couple from winter break that were never fulfilled. Here are three things we wish we did over winter break, but didn’t.

1. Stop spending so much money.

At school, it seems like I am always buying something, whether I need it or not. Whether it is a protractor for geology, more washer detergent, or a quick stop by McDonalds (shout out to All Day Breakfast), it seems like I am always spending on something while at school. Naively, I made a promise to save more money once I got home. There is food at home, I figured and pretty much anything I really needed could be found on some shelf or in some closet. However, now coming to the end of break and a stomach full of sushi, my bank account is looking awfully similar to pre-break days...

2. Not spending time with family.

One of the most exciting parts of coming home from school for break is getting to see all of your high school friends. I spent numerous nights at bonfires, the beach, lunches and everywhere in between. It is great to catch up with people you haven’t seen for months. But, in an unfortunate tradeoff, I didn’t spend as much time with my family as I wanted. Other than Christmas and my birthday, I was most likely hanging out with my friends instead of talking with my dad, taking my sister driving, or playing board games with mom (no matter how lame and outdated).

3. Sleeping TOO much.

This one may be debated. Winter Break has “break” in it for a reason: After grueling exams, students need and frankly deserve, a little reprieve from academic obligations. Naturally, many choose sleep as the optimum form of resting. My first week back home, I slept until almost 2:30 p.m. every day, waking just in time a couple of days to pick my sister up from school at 3:20. While I definitely needed time to refuel after Dead Week and exams, I can’t help but wish I took better advantage of all that time. Maybe then I would have had more time to play Scrabble with Mom?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
